Job Summary

The Program Leading to University Success (PLUS), EWU, is seeking skilled and team-oriented applicants for the position: Retention Specialist – Program Leading to University Success. PLUS provides free academic support to EWU students through study groups, supplemental instruction, tutoring, academic coaching, and online assistance. Peers work in the Learning Commons of the JFK Library and across Cheney and Spokane campuses. PLUS is CRLA-certified to provide tutor training. PLUS Retention Specialists oversee Academic Coaching, Study Groups, and Tutoring, supporting EWU’s strategic plan to increase student access, learning, development, and completion.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience coordinating a university or college student success program, tutoring program, or academic coaching program Experience working with university students Experience hiring, supervising, training, or organizing employees or volunteer staff Experience coordinating university programs that provide academic services to multiple participants Experience using university educational best practices to support student learning inside and outside the classroom

Job Duties

Oversee the implementation, coordination, and evaluation of PLUS programming. Facilitate instruction of students, individually and in groups, on student success strategies. Hire, supervise, train, and evaluate student employees to become peer tutors, facilitators, SI leaders, academic coaches, and office aides; submit appropriate HR paperwork and approve timesheets. Define performance expectations, ensure accountability, and provide ongoing feedback, coaching, and mentoring to PLUS student staff. Design and implement professional development for student employees on topics including customer service, resume building, job search, social media etiquette, and leadership skills. Design, implement, and evaluate an academic success strategies curriculum for PLUS presentations, workshops, and events for faculty and departments on campus.

Administrative and Evaluation

Design, implement, evaluate, and report on designated retention programs, projects, and activities. Manage and analyze EWU student retention data using EAB Navigate and Banner. Utilize EAB Navigate Tutoring platform to support student success needs. Develop training modules for tutoring-related functions within Navigate and ensure new users are trained. Monitor and manage Alerts and Cases within Navigate to connect students with appropriate resources promptly. Liaise with faculty, CAAR advisors, college administration, and student service units to promote the EagleCare Network and a coordinated student care experience. Develop and maintain relationships with faculty and student service units to provide coordinated support across campus and community resources.

Engagement and Outreach

Coordinate PLUS outreach across campus and in the community, including orientation events and Admitted Student Days. Liaise with externally-funded student support programs (CAMP, McNair, Chicana/o/x Studies, Title III). Serve on EWU committees impacting student success and retention. Create and maintain PLUS pages and forms on the EWU PLUS website.

Support Director as necessary. Create a front office environment that is student- and faculty-centered; responsive and helpful. Work in Catalyst office as needed. Other duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

This position involves handling university funds or items of value, and unsupervised access with vulnerable populations. Offer of employment contingent upon successful background check prior to beginning employment. Immunization and Compliance

All new employees must comply with EWU Immunization Policy 602-02 and provide proof of immunity or vaccination to MMR before work begins. Waivers for medical or religious beliefs are available. This position is covered by the Public School Employees’ of Washington Collective Bargaining Agreement. Training via Canvas will be provided; Workplace Belonging training is required by March 31, 2026.

Salary and Posting Details
