Overview
Introduction: Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH), part of the State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), is seeking to hire a Stationary Engineer within the CVH Power Plant. This is a full-time position on the 2nd shift (3:00 PM - 11:00 PM) with every other Tuesday/Friday off and every other weekend off (straight 8 hours paid lunch). The facility is located at 1000 Silver Street in Middletown, CT 06457. The position offers shift and weekend differentials and is eligible for state employee benefits and professional growth opportunities. Work environment: Office/on-site. In this position, you will apply your mechanical and electrical knowledge to operate and maintain power plant equipment. Responsibilities include: Operate and maintain three 600-horsepower boilers and related steam systems (up to 150 psi). Engage and disengage breakers feeding 4160-volt systems. Operate a 1200-kilowatt generator during power outages. Inspect boiler room gauges, indicators, charts, and operation records; supervise or assign tasks to subordinates as needed. Perform periodic and special tests on facilities and equipment; make adjustments as necessary. Maintain and repair mechanical equipment, including bearings, packing glands, tubes, gaskets, valves, and other components. Inspect and repair generating equipment, pumps, fans, compressors, and related electrical/mechanical systems. Conduct simple boiler water analyses and determine treatment requirements; manage water treatment chemicals. Record operating data, perform fuel-specific gravity tests and gas leak checks. May assist with general building maintenance and repair; inspect/repair steam traps and insulation as required. Act as engineer in charge of a heating plant; supervise boiler tending, inspect equipment, and verify operation records. Perform related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of operating, maintaining, and repairing boilers, generators, and related mechanical equipment. • Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to use computer software. Minimum Qualifications
General Experience:
Three (3) years of experience in operation, maintenance, and repair of steam boilers or significant auxiliary boiler room/power plant equipment. Preferred Qualifications
Experience with high, medium, and low-pressure steam (15-50 PSI). Experience in a large power plant with 3 x 600 HP boilers. Experience testing and operating a 1200 KW generator. Experience with composite voltage switch gear (460 Volt). Experience with Joint Commission recording requirements. Experience using computers. Special Requirements
Incumbents may be required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits, and/or certifications as determined by the appointing authority. Physical Requirements
Must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual/auditory acuity. A physical examination may be required. Working Conditions
Possible exposure to dust, noise, heat, and risk of injury from equipment. May need to complete an asbestos removal program per EPA guidelines. Use of protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles may be required. Affirmative Action / Equal Opportunity
