This position is located at the Regional Clinical Laboratory at Austin State Hospital and acts as the Hematology/Coagulation department supervisor. The role includes management and leadership of the Hematology/Coagulation department, supervision of daily operations, and independent performing of routine clinical laboratory work. The department focuses on Hematology and Coagulation testing with emphasis on quality control, regulatory compliance, and staff development.
Responsibilities
Provide management and leadership for the Hematology/Coagulation department to ensure CAP/CLIA regulatory compliance and competency of personnel.
Oversee day-to-day operations of the Hematology/Coagulation department and supervise staff; assign and monitor work; teach Medical Laboratory Science trainees on the bench and in didactic sessions; assist in MLS training programs as needed.
Perform routine and specialized laboratory procedures; maintain quality control standards; calibrate and troubleshoot equipment; prepare reagents; train personnel; manage supply inventories; maintain documentation and records.
Interpret highly complex results, evaluate data, and release final results via the LIS; participate in continuing education and training; perform instrument maintenance and problem resolution.
Ensure safety, infection control, and risk management programs; participate in facility testing programs including TB testing and safety initiatives.
Support disaster response/COOP activities and adapt to alternate shifts or locations as needed.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Knowledge of general laboratory concepts for Hematology and Coagulation testing; supervisory principles; laboratory safety and quality assurance practices; regulatory requirements.
Ability to keep accurate records; troubleshoot laboratory equipment; apply aseptic techniques; manage staff; follow SOPs; teach procedures to co-workers and students; prepare diagnostic reagents and controls.
Proficiency with computer systems; effective oral and written communication; ability to prioritize, organize tasks, and work in a team environment to meet deadlines.
Qualifications
Must be certified as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by ASCP or equivalent.
Have earned a baccalaureate or associate degree; at least two years of clinical laboratory experience.
Pass pre-employment background checks, drug screen, and related registry checks; meet immunization requirements.

Location: Austin State Hospital, 4110 Guadalupe, Austin, TX
Travel: Up to 10%; Regular/full-time position; nonexempt; Monday–Friday days with possible weekend/holiday coverage as needed.
Telework: Not eligible for telework (may be eligible per agency policies).
