The Surgical and Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (SICU and Neuro ICU) has a combined total of 30 intensive care beds providing specialized care to critically ill adults (14 and older). The unit typically has a 50/50 split between neuro and surgical patients. The focus includes patients with conditions such as major elective and emergency surgical procedures, multi-trauma, traumatic brain injury, spinal injury, stroke, seizure, sepsis/multi-organ failure, hemodynamic instability, and failure to wean.

Care involves comprehensive physical assessments, intensive monitoring, laboratory management, ventilator support, and hemodynamic monitoring. Skills required include ICP monitoring via EVD or bolt, spinal drains/catheters, brain oxygen monitoring, Artic Sun therapy, continuous EEG, intra-arterial catheter, non-invasive cardiac output, mechanical ventilation, renal replacement therapy, reconstructive flap monitoring, and massive transfusions. Nurses support procedures like arterial and central line placement, external ventricular drains, ICP monitors, SEPS drains, bedside bronchoscopy, abdominal washouts, tracheostomy, PEG tube placement, lumbar punctures, chest tubes, pigtail drains, among others.

The nurse's responsibilities include:

Implementing physician orders, administering medications, starting IVs, performing treatments, procedures, and tests, and documenting care as per policies and regulations.

Ordering, interpreting, and evaluating diagnostic tests.

Assessing patient needs and responses to care.

Applying sound nursing judgment in patient care decisions.

Providing primary and emergency care for injuries and illnesses.

Administering medications as ordered.

Collaborating with the team to develop patient care plans.

Leading and guiding ancillary staff while maintaining professional standards.

Qualifications include:

Graduation from an accredited nursing program (Diploma, Associate, or Baccalaureate Degree).

Current NYS Registered Nurse license.

Certification in BLS and ACLS.

Excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills.

Knowledge of quality improvement principles and problem-solving tools.
