The Surgical and Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (SICU and Neuro ICU) has a combined total of 30 intensive care beds designed to provide specialized care to critically ill adult patients (14 and older). The unit typically has a 50/50 split of neuro and surgical patients.

The focus of care includes patients with life-threatening conditions related to major elective and emergency surgical procedures, multi-trauma, traumatic brain injury, spinal injury, stroke, seizure, sepsis/multi-organ failure, hemodynamic instability, and failure to wean. SICU and Neuro ICU nurses are responsible for comprehensive physical assessments, intensive monitoring, laboratory value management, ventilator management, and hemodynamic monitoring.

Skills required include ICP monitoring via EVD or bolt, spinal drains/catheters, brain oxygen monitoring, Artic Sun therapy, continuous EEG, intra-arterial catheter, non-invasive cardiac output, mechanical ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy, reconstructive flap monitoring, and massive blood transfusion. Nurses support procedures such as arterial line placement, central line placement, external ventricular drains, ICP monitors, SEPS drains, bedside bronchoscopy, abdominal washouts, tracheostomy, PEG tube placement, lumbar punctures, chest tubes, pigtail drains, among others.

The nurse's responsibilities include:

Implementation of physician orders, medication administration, IV starts, treatments, procedures, and documentation according to policies and regulations.

Ordering, interpreting, and evaluating diagnostic tests to assess patient conditions.

Assessing patient needs and responses to care.

Applying sound nursing judgment in care management decisions.

Providing primary and emergency care for injuries and illnesses.

Administering medications as ordered.

Collaborating with the nursing team to develop patient care plans.

Supervising ancillary personnel and maintaining professional standards.

Qualifications include:

Graduation from a professional nursing program (Diploma, Associate, or Baccalaureate Degree).

Current NYS Registered Nurse license.

Certification in BLS and ACLS.

Excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills.

Knowledge of quality improvement concepts and problem-solving tools.
