Per Diem Medical Assistant (9245C) University Health Services 81547 University Health Services (UHS) at the University of California, Berkeley provides a comprehensive on‑campus health center offering primary medical care, counseling, psychological services and health promotion programs to students, faculty and staff. UHS operates Monday‑Friday 8:00 AM‑6:00 PM and on weekends, serving approximately 65,000 visits annually across primary, urgent, occupational and specialty clinics.

Responsibilities Clinic Reception

Greets patients, verifies eligibility, ensures required forms (Self‑sufficient minor, Statement of Financial Responsibility, Notice of Privacy Practices) are completed before the patient is seen.

Answers telephone calls and refers to appropriate personnel; takes clear and accurate messages.

Schedules and reschedules patient appointments using a computerized system to maximize clinic efficiency.

Demonstrates priority setting and organizational skills; directs or escorts patients as necessary and assures patients leaving the area have appropriate instructions, forms and referral information.

Intake and Checkout

Documents chief complaint and all patient interactions according to established guidelines.

Takes vital signs and rooms patient as per unit guidelines.

Documents findings and reports abnormal findings to RN or clinician.

Instructs patient in specimen collection and performs specific testing as defined by assigned unit (e.g., visual acuity using Snellen chart, urine dipstick).

May assist with examinations and procedures using sterile techniques as indicated.

Reviews after visit summary and ensures the client receives appropriate paperwork before they leave.

Handles the advice line, answering more complex questions and referring as necessary (does not include triage, assessment or advice).

Schedules/reschedules patient appointments using a computerized appointment system; for specialty clinic schedules appointments for specialty physicians.

Swabs patients for Strep, Influenza and COVID tests; supports staffing various surveillance sites for COVID tests.

Clinic Maintenance and Supplies

Demonstrates ability to use equipment correctly and safely; notices and reports problems with equipment.

Keeps inventory of supplies and restocks in assigned area as needed, including patient education material; may be responsible for ordering clinic supplies.

Cleans and stocks rooms in assigned areas as per protocol.

Checks for and replaces expired items in exam rooms during downtime.

Wipes down waiting rooms at the beginning and at the end of the day.

Removes any PHI left in the exam room before rooming the next patient.

Other duties as assigned; commits to professional and career development by staying up to date on required trainings and best practices.

Required Qualifications

High school graduation (or GED).

Completion of Medical Assistant training through an accredited program.

Current BLS/CPR certification.

Current Medical Assistant Diploma.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Literacy with EHR systems and patient tracking.

Salary & Benefits This is a 20% part‑time (8 hours per week) per diem position. The per diem hourly rate for this position is $33.50. Per diem positions are not eligible for the UC benefits plan.
