Overview
Transmission (Substation Design) Engineer I - Senior role at Sunflower Electric Power Corporation. Responsibilities
Substation Design: Provide team leadership in development of overall design and design modification of substations and switching stations to projects assigned to external design and construction entities. Provide technical support for equipment and materials procurement and installation. Design and complete high voltage (HV) and extra high voltage (EHV) substation projects for new and modified facilities. Manage projects assigned to external engineering consultants or act as project lead for external consultants on substation projects. Coordinate with other departments to determine budget and scope, gather and analyze project information, and ensure alignment with approved programs, modifications, and upgrades. Perform calculations related to substation physical design (conduit fill, structure loadings) to meet industry standards. Communicate design requirements effectively and collaborate with civil, land development, substation electrical, and operations teams. Prepare bid documents for substation equipment (transformers, breakers, wave traps, switches, bus work, conduit, and other apparatus) using applicable codes and standards. Develop and oversee job cost estimates incorporating input from substation electrical, operations, and outside consulting groups. Direct design technicians in the creation of physical substation design drawing packages. System Protection: Lead data collection and use of computer programs to provide required information for relay, fuses, recloser, and breaker coordination for Sunflower transmission and Members distribution systems, including device setting and procurement. Provide leadership in breaker operation analysis and report preparation. Subject matter expert leadership for PRC-002, PRC-004, PRC-006, PRC-023, and PRC-027 as needed. Standards: Ensure compliance with ANSI/IEEE, NERC Reliability, NESC, ASTM, ASCE standards. Lead development and maintenance of Sunflower standards. Leadership and Safety: Provide leadership, coaching, and counseling to employees; manage performance expectations and training; promote a safe work environment and compliance with safety policies and clearance procedures as applicable.
