Overview Lead Electrical Engineer position located in Overland Park, KS. This role involves leading substation design at EHV transmission levels, providing technical guidance, and ensuring execution quality on projects. Responsibilities Function as a technical specialist or in a lead substation design role encompassing EHV transmission level voltage class. Under general direction, develops and applies advanced engineering techniques, concepts and approaches to complex engineering problems. Provide technical guidance over a group or supervise engineering staff on substation design projects. May be responsible for developing, validating, and presenting specialist/technical output. Lead other engineers and interface directly with clients. Be responsible for the overall execution and quality of substation projects as a leader within a team environment. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an accredited program in the home country or country of practice. Minimum of 8 years related work experience. Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (criminal/civil background check, drug screen, motor vehicle records search) as applicable by law and regulation. Preferred Qualifications Power/Power Systems experience preferred. Quality Assurance and Quality Control of EHV substation design projects. EHV Substation design experience (physical & P&C). Technical experience and complex research for equipment/materials selection. Prepare one-lines, connection diagrams, panel elevations and protection & control schematics for power substation equipment. Prepare auxiliary power equipment sizing calculations. Design wiring diagrams for protective relaying panels. Perform engineering calculations/studies related to substation projects (e.g., lightning protection, conduit fill, station service loading, surge arrester sizing, voltage drop). Create RTU control, status and analog point lists, raceway/cable schedules, maintenance/signage and nameplates. Prepare equipment arrangement, grounding, foundation and conduit plans for high voltage substations. Review shop drawings, vendor quotes and bid evaluations; develop construction release documents. Experience with 500 kV – 13.8 kV substations, varying voltage classes; open air and GIS; various bus configurations; raceway/grounding drawings; plan and section drawings. Other Experience Preferred Written communications; drive for results; priority setting; planning; delegation; direct guidance; conflict management; listening; building effective teams. Advanced knowledge of engineering design principles and standards related to the discipline. Key Responsibilities Engineering Standards Develop and maintain budgets and schedules for multiple substation design projects. Perform EHV substation design, including physical design, protective relaying/control with emphasis on continuous improvement. Develop scoping documents for EHV substation projects. Provide guidance on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable codes and BV policies. Assist in developing, maintaining, and updating engineering standards. Provide technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines. Quality/Continuous Improvement Apply knowledge and comply with BV quality program relative to assigned tasks. Ensure compliance with BV quality program during internal Quality Assurance reviews. Provide guidance to others and support continuous improvement efforts. Engineering Production Prepare complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects. Oversee data collection and management for engineering work; perform complex calculations. Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements; review lower-level engineering work. Lead larger production teams or coordinate multiple discipline activity; serve as responsible charge for a project. Project Coordination Coordinate with internal/external team members on moderately complex projects. Manage work assignments and ensure quality from direct reports and project teams. Participate in management, project scheduling, and resource planning meetings. Client Focus Interface with clients, vendors and subcontractors; communicate client interests and drivers to project teams. Support business development or pursuit activities as appropriate. Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology Serve as a technical specialist and provide consultation and guidance to project teams in a practice area; support multiple projects on complex technical challenges. People Management Assist with performance management, mentoring, recognition and corrective actions; participate in career planning and development; mentor less experienced engineers; provide feedback; may supervise other engineers/technicians. Resource Management Implement resource management strategy; manage engineering resources for small groups of a single discipline. Certifications Most positions require professional registration or licensure in the designated country, or active pursuit of such registration.
