Overview
The Pediatric ICU Unit at VCU Medical Center provides the only full-service children's care in central Virginia including a Level 1 pediatric Trauma and Burn Center. The 21-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a vital part of the pediatric programming caring for the most critically ill infants, children, adolescents and their families, who have a wide range of acute and chronic illnesses and injuries. Exquisite emotional acumen and psychosocial skills are paramount to effectively deliver nursing care to children and their caregivers as they progress through the unnatural experience of having an infant, toddler or adolescent with an acute, life threatening illness.
The Nurse Clinician demonstrates a high level of expertise in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the complex patients and their responses to actual or potential health problems. This role assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. The Nurse Clinician provides direction, education, leadership and accountability for program development, implementation and evaluation in area of responsibility. This role includes professional development and empowerment of staff as well as management of resources to promote desired outcomes with attention to quality, efficiency and cost.
Responsibilities
Provide direction, education, leadership and accountability for program development, implementation and evaluation in the area of responsibility.
Support professional development and empowerment of staff, as well as management of resources to promote quality, efficiency and cost outcomes.
Demonstrate a high level of expertise in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of complex patients and their responses to actual or potential health problems.
Assist the health care team with prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state
Certification
AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent
Experience
Experience REQUIRED: 5 Years Nursing Experience Required; Minimum of one year experience in the position's specialty patient population or practice setting
Experience PREFERRED
Experience in staff education and professional development (orientation, preceptorship, in-services education, etc.)
Academic health care experience
Education/Training
Bachelor’s degree in nursing. Must be enrolled in a Master’s degree program at the time of application and must be complete within 36 months of hire. Special consideration will be given for applicants enrolled in Baccalaureate to Doctoral programs who will not attain a Master’s degree and may require longer than 36 months to complete the terminal degree.
Education/Training – Preferred
Master's Degree in Nursing or a related field. If the master’s degree is not in Nursing, then it is required to have a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing
Independent action(s) required
Has full authority and accountability for direction and leadership of program planning, guideline development, setting of practice standards within the confines of the organization’s/divisions/units mission, goals and objectives.
Manages human, fiscal and other resources to ensure quality programs/processes/services with measurable positive outcomes.
Supervisory responsibilities
Negotiable with immediate supervisor in collaboration with the Nurse Manager.
Additional position requirements
Will generally work day shift, but may require flexibility for special projects or to meet organization and staff needs.
Age Specific groups served: As appropriate based on unit assignment.

Physical: Lifting 20-50 lbs. Lifting 50-100 lbs.
