Summary This position is responsible for accepting, processing, and performing waived and moderate laboratory testing and reporting for the testing area. This position requires teamwork to achieve common goals and meet deadlines to provide quality care to clients and patients. Required Job Qualifications Experience: No previous experience required. Associates degree or higher in relevant science required, or education/work experience meeting the qualification of moderate complexity testing personnel as defined by CLIA 42 CFR 493 1489. Employees in this job classification are qualified to perform waived and moderate complexity testing. Employees' education and/or laboratory experience meet the requirements delineated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1996. RUMC reserves the right to limit an MLT's scope of testing. Certification (or eligible) from a nationally recognized certifying agency is required. Eligibility as determined by ASCP and/or AMT requirements. Some laboratory disciplines may require more stringent certification criteria. Responsibilities Job Responsibilities: Order Entry/Customer Service: Performs multiple computer entry, inquiry, and receiving functions. Transcribes laboratory orders and registration activities when needed. Demonstrates good communication and customer service skills on the phone and in person. Calls critical results, documents to whom and that a “read back” was performed within the expected time frame. Specimen Processing: Accessions and processes specimens according to the appropriate procedure; prepares specimens for transport or delivery. Recognizes and resolves specimen and equipment problems. Delivers specimens to Rush laboratory locations, and/or loads specimens on instrumentation. Performs Laboratory Testing: Utilizes required PPE as defined by the lab area. Labels and processes specimens properly. Performs all laboratory procedures efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision once trained; all testing must follow Rush-approved Policies and Procedures. Quality Control and Preventative Maintenance: Performs QC procedures and preventative maintenance, including corrective action and documentation, for all procedures and instrumentation. Recognizes QC problems or discrepancies and notifies the supervisor or designee as needed. Troubleshooting: Performs basic troubleshooting of equipment and processes with minimal assistance; documents action and notifies appropriate personnel when problems occur. Organization of Work Area: Keeps work area neat, clean, organized, and well-stocked; disinfects the area at the beginning and end of each shift. Specimen Acceptability: Accepts only appropriate specimens. Notifies the appropriate person if specimens must be redrawn and documents the notification. Turnaround Time: Meets turnaround time expectations by prioritizing and organizing the workload for the shift. Monitors the pending list to ensure turnaround time for all samples. Time Management: Uses time effectively, seeks additional duties when tasks are complete, and adheres to break and lunch times. Continuing Education: Required to obtain and document 12 hours of laboratory continuing education per year. Special Projects: Accepts and/or volunteers for method evaluations, new procedure development or other special projects; participates in procedure implementation and training of new staff and students; contributes to process improvement. Report Reviewing and Results Reporting: Reviews lab results as required and takes appropriate action before verification and release; calls critical results within defined time frames; transcribes results into the Lab Information System.
