Summary: This position is responsible for accepting, processing, and performing waived and moderate laboratory testing and reporting for the testing area. Required Qualifications
Experience: No previous experience required. Associates degree or higher in a relevant science, or education/work experience meeting the qualification of moderate complexity testing personnel as defined by CLIA 42 CFR 493 1489. Employees in this job classification are qualified to perform waived and moderate complexity testing. Education and/or laboratory experience meet the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) requirements. RUMC reserves the right to limit an MLT\'s scope of testing. Certification (or eligible) from a nationally recognized certifying agency is required. Eligibility as determined by ASCP and/or AMT requirements. Some disciplines may require more stringent certification criteria. Responsibilities
Order Entry/Customer Service: Performs multiple computer entry, inquiry, and receiving functions; transcribes laboratory orders and registration activities when needed; communicates effectively on the phone and in person; calls critical results with documentation of read-back within the expected time frame. Specimen Processing: Accessions and processes specimens according to procedures; prepares specimens for transport or delivery; recognizes and resolves specimen and equipment problems; delivers specimens to Rush laboratory locations or loads them on instrumentation. Laboratory Testing: Uses required PPE; labels and processes specimens properly; performs laboratory procedures efficiently under trained supervision; adheres to Rush policies and procedures. Quality Control and Preventative Maintenance: Performs QC procedures and maintenance for procedures and instrumentation; identifies QC problems and notifies the supervisor per procedure. Troubleshooting: Performs basic troubleshooting of equipment and processes with minimal assistance; documents actions and seeks help when needed. Organization of Work Area: Keeps work area neat, clean, organized, and stocked; disinfection at shift start and end. Specimen Acceptability: Accepts only appropriate specimens; notifies and documents when specimens must be redrawn. Turnaround Time Management: Prioritizes workload to meet turnaround times; monitors pending lists to ensure timely processing. Time Management: Uses time effectively, completes tasks without unnecessary overtime, and adheres to break times. Continuing Education: Required to obtain and document 12 hours of laboratory continuing education per year. Special Projects: Participates in method evaluations, new procedures, and process improvement projects; participates in training of new staff and students. Report Reviewing and Results Reporting: Reviews lab results as required, takes appropriate action before verification; communicates critical results within defined time frames; transcribes results to the Lab Information System.
