The Biomedical Engineering Technician III is responsible for performing preventive maintenance inspections on medical equipment to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and departmental goals. This role involves regular interaction with hospital departments to ensure equipment meets clinical needs.
Responsibilities
Conduct preventive maintenance and inspections using appropriate test equipment.
Interpret and follow manufacturer schematics to diagnose and repair medical equipment.
Perform timely repairs and maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and communicate status updates to customers.
Document all work performed accurately and promptly.
Participate in the selection, installation, setup, and disposition of medical equipment.
Monitor and evaluate service quality and documentation provided by manufacturers and third-party service providers.
Assist in developing and updating the Medical Equipment Management Plan.
Determine inspection and preventive maintenance levels required for various device types.
Lead and contribute to special projects involving equipment selection, installation, adaptation, design, modification, or disposition.
Demonstrate independent project leadership, managing timelines, communicating progress, and ensuring follow-through on commitments.
Minimum Education
High School Diploma or GED
Completion of a two-year vocational/technical program or AA degree equivalent in a related field
Minimum Work Experience
3+ years inspecting, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing the following types of Medical Equipment: physiologic monitors; various styles of infusion/ feeding pumps; electrocardiographs; blood pressure monitors; infant incubators; electric beds; nurse call systems; cribs; steris scope washers; OR Lights; OR Tables; radiant warmers; electrosurgical units; defibrillator monitors; patient scales; hypo/hyperthermia equipment; physical therapy equipment; sterilizers; misc equipment used in the Operating room; and some clinical laboratory equipment, such as centrifuges, incubators, slide stainers, shakers, warmers, and flame photometers.
3+ additional years' experience troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing specialized medical equipment such as anesthesia instruments; hemodialysis units; ventilators; advanced cardiac monitoring; lasers; heart-lung bypass machines; Ultrasound; clinical laboratory analyzers; and/or radiologic equipment (demonstrated through experience from manufacturer’s service training or other reliable source). Ability to repair devices regularly without assistance.
Functional Accountabilities
Repair Medical Equipment
– Troubleshoot and repair complex electronic and electromechanical biomedical equipment to subassembly level.
Provide on-call coverage to ensure 24-hour emergency coverage for the hospital.
Purchasing & Parts
Prepare purchase order requests for repair parts, including vendor selection.
Follow up and ensure parts have been delivered and installed.
Customer Service
Routinely contact requestors regarding assigned work orders to notify receipt and estimated time of arrival.
Communicate steps to complete work orders and provide any follow-up information.
Represent the engineering staff in a professional and helpful manner.
When necessary, routinely follow up with management to communicate or request assistance in order to complete work orders.
Team & Work Relations
Communicate with staff and management to solve problems and improve processes.
Support the work effort of the team.
Assist new team members with general information when necessary.
Act as a member of the internal engineering emergency response team.
