Job Description The surgical technologist is an allied health professional who works with surgeons and other health care practitioners providing surgical care to patients in a variety of settings. The surgical technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. They possess expertise in sterile and aseptic technique and combine knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and tools to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive procedures. Performs other duties as assigned. Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate. INTEGRIS Health is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.

Responsibilities

Maintains the sterile field.

Demonstrates understanding of the procedure and anticipates the surgeon's needs.

Ensures quality patient care and patient safety during the operative procedure.

Checks supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.

Scrubs, gowns, and gloves; sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions.

Performs counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed.

Gowns and gloves the surgeon and assistants; helps in draping the sterile field.

Passes instruments and other items to the surgeon during the procedure.

Ensures proper disposition of surgical specimens and cultures.

Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.

Prepares sterile dressings and cleans instruments for terminal sterilization.

Assists with terminal cleaning of the room and prepping for the next patient.

Completes sterilization procedures per manufacturer instructions and hospital guidelines.

Documents sterilization processes and maintains related charts/logs as required.

Qualifications

BCLS within 120 days of employment

2 years of experience as a surgical technologist

Experience scrubbing in multiple specialties

Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification preferred

Ability to communicate effectively in English

Knowledge of preparing and sterilizing surgical instruments and supplies preferred

For Radiology/Cath Lab: 6 months experience in angiography preferred; experience with PTA/PTCA, laser PTA/PTCA, and intra-aortic balloon pump may be required

Potential for exposure to infections and communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment, lasers, radiology and fluoroscopy equipment, needle sticks, and chemicals.
