Bridge Load Rating Engineer I – IV - Bridge Division at Texas Department of Transportation
TxDOT’s Bridge Division is looking to hire a Bridge Load Rating Engineer I – IV based in Austin, TX. This Engineer will work in an established team to help TxDOT ensure the safety of the travelling public, perform and review simple and complex analyses of bridges to determine the safe load carrying capacity, participate in the instrumentation and the load testing of bridges, and help ensure compliance with TxDOT policy and Federal requirements related to load ratings and load posting. Using your skills, you will help TxDOT’s 25 districts and the state of Texas create a stronger, more resilient transportation network.
Responsibilities
Ensures compliance with National Bridge Inspection Standards
Drives/travels to project/work locations to make on-site engineering reviews, analyses, tests and to provide technical support
Reviews designs and load ratings of bridges and related structures prepared by other engineers and technicians
Makes presentations and represents TxDOT
Writes reports, specifications, and test procedures
Rates and monitors load carrying capacities of bridges
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
Minimum Qualifications Education : Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science bachelor’s or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
Experience : Transportation Engineer I : 4 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
Transportation Engineer II : 5 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
Transportation Engineer III : 6 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
Transportation Engineer IV : 7 YEARS engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
Licenses and Certification :
Mandatory: Licensed Professional Engineer
Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate
Safety Impact certification is not required at the time of application. The Safety Impact certification will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire
Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
Competencies Transportation Engineer I :
Structural engineering terminology, principles, practices and methods and the application of engineering theory
Standards and specifications for bridges and other transportation structures
Bridge construction and evaluation methods, procedures and regulations
Bridge inspection and appraisal methods and procedures
Report writing and proofreading skills
Researching, analyzing, and interpreting policies and state and federal laws and regulations specific to functional area
Applying engineering principles, practices, and methods in job responsibilities
Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long-term deadlines
Transportation Engineer II and III
– Greater skill in all of the above plus:
Computerized structural analysis techniques
Fatigue and fracture mechanics
Speaking to present images and ideas clearly to optimize audience understanding
Facilitating groups and guiding objectives, staying on task and reaching consensus
Decision-making to support business objectives
Transportation Engineer IV
– Greater skill in all of the above plus:
Establishing plans and objectives that align with business strategy
Coordinating and directing multiple projects
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
Subject to noise
Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
Climbing - ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps
Walking – long distance between sites
Stooping, crouching
Close Visual Acuity – data, figures, computer screen
Repetitive Motion – wrists, hands, fingers
Close Visual Acuity – inspection of small defects/parts
