The University of Miami Health System (UHealth) has an exciting opportunity for a Medical Assistant in the Radiation Oncology Department at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, Downtown. Sign-On Bonus: $5,000 Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Works directly with the Nurse Manager/Nurse Supervisor and/or Charge Nurse to ensure clinic is running smoothly Performs patient interviews for chief complaint, medication reconciliation and pertinent history Obtains vital signs and patient information for the medical record Prepares treatment room prior to and post examination Assists medical provider as a chaperone as indicated Assists with physical examinations by preparing supplies and handing instruments/materials to the medical provider as directed Performs venipunctures and collects routine laboratory specimens as directed by medical practitioners/nursing leaders Performs basic first aid Bladder scanning Ostomy care Simple dressing changes (no central line and/or PICC/Midline dressing) Performs point-of-care testing Reports observed signs and symptoms, obtained from the patient, to the provider Assists with patient daily care activities Operates and/or performs with medical equipment after training and demonstrated competency Refills medication prescriptions, as ordered by the medical provider, by calling the patient’s pharmacy Provides patients with basic educational instruction regarding examination procedures Cleans and sterilizes medical instruments; observes sterile technique Documents accurate pertinent information in the patient’s electronic medical record Restocks patient room Screen telephone calls or EMR messages and forward to appropriate staff Assists staff in emergency care Maintains medical supplies by checking expiration dates and package integrity Maintains medical equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ and biomedical requirements Assists in performing clerical duties such as answering phones, faxing, and coordinating procedures Schedules appointments and tests Arranges hospital admissions as applicable Obtains authorization from insurance companies Contacts patients regarding “No Show” Other duties as assigned The MA in hospital-based clinics will not perform any injections or medication administration. Ability to demonstrate a sustainable high level of proficiency in duties within a Florida Medical Assistant’s scope Knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments Knowledge of sterile technique and other special procedures when applicable Knowledge of basic infection control practices and universal precautions Knowledge of age-appropriate patient care Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and clinical staff Education
Required High School diploma or equivalent Active and current BLS provider card by the American Heart Association Certification and Licensing
AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Required Medical Assistant certification and graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program Approved MA Certifications
CMA - Certified Medical Assistant (AAMA) RMA - Registered Medical Assistant (AMT) CCMA - Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (NHA) NCMA - National Certified Medical Assistant (NHA - NCCT) NRCMA - Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NAHP) Work Experience
One (1) year of relevant work experience preferred Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.
