The Clinical Research Nurse (CRN) is a licensed clinician who supports, facilitates and coordinates daily clinical trial activities under minimal supervision, playing a critical role in the conduct of the study. The CRN provides direct patient care to research patients under the supervision of the Clinical Trials Manager and Principal Investigator. This position works with the Performance Improvement department, sponsor, and institution to support GCP compliance, financial and related aspects of the research study. The CRN serves as a liaison between physicians, patients, staff and sponsors and delivers patient care aligned with regulatory guidelines and Houston Methodist standards for safety and service.

Responsibilities

Uses therapeutic communication to provide research interventions and coordinates with the interprofessional team as written in the research protocol. Contributes to teamwork by responding positively to requests for assistance.

Provides patient education regarding disease process; involves patient and family in decision-making; evaluates comprehension and adapts teaching methods. Advocates for patients/families to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns.

Facilitates onboarding and orientation for new staff in conjunction with the Clinical Trials Manager. Precepts new clinical research staff in the clinical setting.

Service/Operational Functions

Manages multiple projects at different stages of the clinical research process (Phase 1–Phase 4).

Coordinates pre-site and site initiation visits; trains hospital and clinic staff on scientific aspects and protocol requirements; attends off-site investigator meetings.

Provides comprehensive nursing assessments to develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate activities for all phases of clinical research; monitors safety and reports adverse events.

Supports improvement of patient satisfaction through accountability to service standards.

Quality/Safety Functions

Follows the protocol and nursing process; performs nursing functions independently and in collaboration with the PI as approved for the conduct of clinical research.

Collects, processes and ships protocol-required lab specimens; maintains inventory and laboratory certifications; handles study closeout procedures including documentation, return of materials and data archiving.

Collaborates with the PI and IRB to prepare regulatory documents ensuring compliance with local and federal standards; follows Good Clinical Practice guidelines.

Finance Functions

Assists in development of calendars and cost analyses; approves study calendars for the Clinical Trials Management System.

Identifies, recruits, and consents subjects; monitors enrollment goals and adjusts strategies as needed.

Enters study data into the CTMS per Houston Methodist Research Institute policy.

Growth/Innovation

Identifies areas for innovation and efficiency in patient care operations and contributes to performance improvement projects.

Maintains ongoing professional growth; participates in unit activities and updates the IDP regularly.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or higher from an accredited school of nursing

Work Experience

One year acute care or clinical research experience

Licenses and Certifications - Required

RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure; Compact Licensure; must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency

BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Clinical skills and competencies through ongoing assessments and evaluations

Proficiency in English (speaking, reading, writing) for patient and safety communications

Effective communication with patients, families, physicians, and staff with a customer-service focus

Clinical problem solving and critical thinking; ability to adapt to multiple priorities with minimal supervision

Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills; commitment to excellent customer service

Basic computer skills; ability to use hospital information systems and office software

Work Attire: Uniforms/Scrubs; other department-approved attire

On-Call: On-call requirements may vary; no on-call obligation specified

Travel: Travel within the Houston metropolitan area not required; no travel outside the area anticipated
