At Houston Methodist, the Clinical Research Nurse (CRN) is a licensed clinician who supports, facilitates and coordinates daily clinical trial activities under minimal supervision. The CRN provides direct patient care to research patients under the supervision of the Clinical Trials Manager and Principal Investigator, and implements clinical research patient care via the research protocol. The CRN collaborates with the Performance Improvement department, sponsor, and institution to support and provide guidance on GCP compliance, financial and related aspects of the research study. The CRN serves as a liaison between physicians, patients, staff and sponsors, delivering patient care that adheres to regulatory standards and Houston Methodist guidelines to ensure patient safety and service quality.
Responsibilities People Essential Functions
Uses therapeutic communication to provide research interventions and coordinates with the interprofessional team as written in the research protocol.
Provides patient education regarding disease processes, involves patient and family in decision-making, and assesses comprehension to adapt teaching methods.
Advocates for patients/families to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns using appropriate resources.
Facilitates onboarding and orientation for new staff; precepts new clinical research staff; supports department improvements in turnover/retention/engagement.
Service Essential Functions
Manages multiple projects at different stages of the clinical research process (Phase 1–Phase 4).
Coordinates pre-site and site initiation visits; trains hospital and clinic staff on protocol requirements; attends off-site investigator meetings.
Provides comprehensive nursing assessments to develop, implement and evaluate activities across all phases of clinical research; monitors safety and reports adverse events.
Supports department initiatives to improve patient satisfaction through service standards.
Quality/Safety Essential Functions
Follows the clinical research protocol and nursing process; modifies care based on ongoing evaluation; performs nursing functions independently and in collaboration with the PI as approved by administration.
Collects, processes and ships protocol-required lab specimens; maintains inventory and laboratory certification; conducts study closeout procedures including material return, sponsor data submission and archiving.
Collaborates with the PI, IRB and regulatory documents to ensure compliance with applicable standards and Good Clinical Practice guidelines.
Finance Essential Functions
Assists in calendar development and Medicare Cost Analysis; differentiates standard of care procedures from research and approves study calendars in the CTMS.
Identifies, recruits and consents subjects; monitors enrollment goals and adjusts enrollment strategies as needed.
Enters study data into the Clinical Trials Management System (CTMS) per Houston Methodist Research Institute policy.
Growth/Innovation Essential Functions
Identifies opportunities for innovation and efficiency in patient care operations; contributes to evidence-based practice and performance improvement projects.
Maintains accountability for ongoing professional growth; participates in unit activities; updates the individual development plan (IDP) regularly.

Qualifications Education
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or higher from an accredited school of nursing
Work Experience
One year acute care or clinical research experience
Licenses and Certifications - Required
RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure; Compact Licensure; must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency
BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA)
