Senior Associate Engineer (Revised) – City of Ontario

The City of Ontario is recruiting for a Senior Associate Engineer to join our team. As a Senior Associate Engineer, you will work in a dynamic environment and be exposed to projects across commercial, industrial, and residential development of 8,000 acres of land, estimated to bring over 150,000 new residents to the City over the next 30 years. You will contribute to efforts extending from the downtown area to the arena district as part of revitalization initiatives. The ideal candidate for the Public Works Engineering Department will enjoy working in a collaborative, fast-paced team environment. The Senior Associate Engineer classification is used in multiple City departments. This recruitment will create an eligibility list to fill current and future vacancies within this classification. The current vacancy exists in the Engineering Department of the Public Works Agency. Procedures

The Eligibility List will include internal and external applicants who meet the qualifications and complete required selection processes. Qualified candidates may participate in an Examination process that may include a combination of an in-person Panel Oral Interview, Practical Exam, Training and Experience evaluation, and/or Written Exam. Public Works Engineering Department Senior Associate Engineers assigned to the Public Works Engineering Department may work in the Engineering Services Division (plan check, inspection and permitting for work within the public right of way), the Capital Improvement Project (CIP) group (overseeing a pavement management program of over $7 million per year), the Land Development Section (managing millions of square feet of industrial warehouses or master planned communities), or the Traffic/Transportation Division (traffic signals, signage, striping and related improvements). The essential functions for the Senior Associate Engineer broadly include: Develops Requests for Proposals, selects and administers agreements and contracts including design, construction, and related construction support services. Coordinates and manages development and public works projects. Acts as liaison to private engineers, surveyors, developers, other public agency employees, and the public. Prepares and processes City Council Agenda items for presentation by the designated official. Supervises, trains, and evaluates professional, technical, and clerical staff. Plans, coordinates and oversees consultants; ensures conformance with standards and resolves procedural questions; administers professional service contracts. Develops and negotiates terms of agreements and contracts. Coordinates with state, county, utility companies, and other agencies for project approval and construction. Prepares and reviews engineering and legal documents; prepares correspondence, reports, and proposals. Represents the City at meetings; participates in hiring processes and performance evaluations; participates in project construction management and administration. Engineering Land Development Division

— When assigned, duties may include: Project Manager during entitlement, plan check, construction, and close-out phases of development projects. Review development applications (residential, commercial, industrial), site plans, and conditional use permits; prepare project comments and conditions for approval. Prepare and review technical reports (e.g., hydraulics and hydrology studies). Engineering Traffic/Transportation Division

— When assigned, duties may include: Direct operations and maintenance of the City\'s traffic signal system and Transportation Management Center. Design traffic signal, streetlight, and sign/striping installations; conduct traffic-related studies and maintain data; issue reports. Review transportation models for roadway infrastructure needs. Engineering CIP Division

— When assigned, duties may include: Develop design plans, specifications and estimates for master planned storm drain projects. Oversee plans, specifications and estimates for the annual pavement rehabilitation program. Engineering Services Division

— When assigned, duties may include: Oversee front counter and permitting staff operations. Oversee in-house and consultant plan check staff; resolve construction issues for CIP and permitted projects. Serve as Construction Manager on CIP projects. Education and Experience

Education:

Bachelor\'s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Civil Engineering or a closely related field. Experience:

Four years of professional civil engineering experience, including two years of supervisory experience through training, mentoring, and review of junior staff. Licenses and Certification

Licenses:

Valid California Class C driver\'s license and acceptable driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment. Certification:

Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California. A

Professional Traffic Engineer

is acceptable if applying for the Traffic/Transportation Division. Note:
