Overview
The Cytotechnologist Senior performs the duties of a technical trainer in the cytology laboratory. This role assists the supervisor in training, scheduling and assigning duties appropriate to each cytotechnologist, coordinating quality control procedures, troubleshooting, maintenance of procedure manuals, training and documentation of method evaluations and inventory control in his/her primary areas of responsibility. This role performs In Situ Hybridization techniques; assists on deep Fine Needle aspiration (FNA) and Ultrasound Guided Fine needle Aspiration (US-FNA); examines cell samples and makes primary diagnoses on all cases (GYN, Non-gyn and FNA), makes final diagnoses on normal limit GYN, and preliminary diagnoses on abnormal GYN, all Non-gyn and FNA. This role must also demonstrate an ability to identify and solve problems with initiative and good judgment to reach quality decisions in leading the cytology staff in his/her primary areas of responsibility. This role will be responsible for placing orders for equipment and office supplies for Cytology, CDC and Surgical Pathology (if requested) and will act as the technical specialist maintaining a constant awareness of new technologies and evaluating tests offered for accuracy, precision and economy. Certified as a Cytotechnologist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology within 6 months of employment into position Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment
Current CT (ASCP) Experience
Experience REQUIRED Minimum of three (3) years of clinical work experience as a Cytotechnologist. Depending on the laboratory assignment, work experience requirement may be specific to a particular specialty area such as deep FNA, US-FNA and In Situ Hybridization technique, etc. Experience PREFERRED: N/A Education/training
Education/training REQUIRED Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science (Cytotechnology Track) from an accredited program Education/training PREFERRED: Master’s Degree in Health Education, Cytotechnology or Clinical Lab Science from an accredited program Independent Action(s) Required
Makes diagnostic decisions on cytologic cases and applies the appropriate criteria to correctly interpret the cases. In cytopreparation, makes correct decisions about the handling of samples for optimal preparations. Demonstrates an ability to identify and solve problems with initiative and good judgment to reach quality decisions in leading the cytology staff. Public relations ability, interpersonal skills and professional telephone manner. Organized, flexible, attention to detail. Ability to effectively communicate with all levels within the organization. Business decorum and appearance. Supports team concept. Demonstrates strong leadership capabilities. Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively and express ideas clearly. Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills. Actively follows appropriate channels of communication with cytology supervisor and management. Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): Assumes the responsibilities of the supervisor in his/her absence.
