Position: Senior Cytotechnologist The Senior Cytotechnologist performs duties as a technical trainer in the cytology laboratory. Responsibilities include training, scheduling, and duty assignment for cytotechnologists, coordinating quality control, troubleshooting, maintaining procedure manuals, training and documenting method evaluations, and managing inventory in primary areas of responsibility.
The role involves performing In Situ Hybridization techniques, assisting with deep Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) and Ultrasound-Guided FNA (US-FNA), examining cell samples, and making primary diagnoses on all cases (GYN, Non-gyn, FNA). The senior technologist makes final diagnoses on normal GYN cases and preliminary diagnoses on abnormal GYN, Non-gyn, and FNA cases. The position requires problem-solving skills, good judgment, and leadership in guiding the cytology staff.
The senior technologist will also be responsible for ordering equipment and supplies for Cytology, CDC, and Surgical Pathology, and will act as a technical specialist, staying updated on new technologies and evaluating tests for accuracy, precision, and cost-effectiveness.
Qualifications
Licensure & Certification:
Certified as a Cytotechnologist by the American Society for Clinical Pathology within 6 months of employment; current CT (ASCP) for ongoing employment.
Experience:
Minimum 3 years of clinical work as a Cytotechnologist; experience in specific areas such as deep FNA, US-FNA, and In Situ Hybridization is preferred.
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Health Science (Cytotechnology Track); Master’s Degree preferred.
Skills & Abilities:
Diagnostic decision-making, sample handling, leadership, communication, organization, professionalism, and adaptability.
Additional Information
Assumes supervisor responsibilities in their absence.
Physical requirements include lifting less than 20 lbs, prolonged standing, and visual acuity.
Must demonstrate strong recall, reasoning, problem-solving, and communication skills.
