The Emergency Department Technician works as a team member with other ancillary personnel under the direction of the registered professional nurse to meet care needs for a specified population of patients. These duties are to be performed in a highly confidential manner, following the mission, values, and behaviors of Insight Hospital and Medical Center. Employees are further expected to provide a high quality of care, service, and kindness toward all patients, staff, physicians, volunteers, and guests. Duties and Responsibilities Under the direction of, and in partnership with, the registered professional nurse, perform activities as directed, based on the individual needs of the patient.

Collect clinical data and report any unusual results to the nurse.

Perform 12 Lead EKGs as directed.

Place patients on cardiac monitors and begin oxygen therapy as directed.

Ensure required supplies are available in patient cubicles and supply cupboards.

Complete patient rounds on an hourly basis.

Maintain open communication with the nursing staff.

Perform assigned therapeutic tasks: lifting, positioning, ambulating patients; assist with dressing changes as directed by the RN; feed patients; assist with application of restraints as directed; perform oral and nasal suctioning; set up suture trays and assist with wound care; collect specimens as assigned (blood, urine, stool, sputum); draw type/cross match for blood administration and transport to the lab; assist with exams and obtain cultures as needed; assist with basic nursing procedures (oral hygiene, grooming, bathing); provide bedpans, urinals, and blankets; deliver and remove food trays and change bed linens as needed.

Retake vital signs in triage and patients waiting for test results at 2- to 4-hour intervals or as directed by the nurse.

Anticipate need for supplies for dressing changes or procedures and place supplies at the bedside in preparation for use.

Assist with patient transport as directed; after completion of Basic Arrhythmia course, may transport STABLE monitored patients to the Telemetry Unit and/or to diagnostic testing areas.

Answer telephone calls and take messages adhering to HIPAA guidelines.

Clean and restock treatment rooms to prepare for the next patient; perform post-mortem care as directed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities High school diploma is required.

Prior experience in a comparable position at Insight Hospital or EMTB (Emergency Medical Technician Basic) is required.

CPR Certification is required.

Demonstrate basic competencies and successful passage of a cognitive exam upon completion of orientation required.

Hospital experience and CNL certificate preferred.

Ability to quickly recognize changes in condition and needs of patients.

Knowledge of patients’ growth and developmental needs.

Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in carrying out work duties.

Ability to work with city departments such as police, fire, ambulance, and other health care officials.
