Overview San Luis Obispo County Parks & Recreation Department is excited to announce that applications are being accepted for a Park Ranger II. This role is ideal for someone passionate about protecting natural resources, ensuring public safety, and educating visitors about the great outdoors.

Responsibilities

Patrol assigned areas to provide assistance to the public in matters relating to their health, safety and welfare.

Check visitors coming into the park; assign appropriate use areas; collect fees as required; maintain records of park activities and prepare related reports.

Enforce park rules and regulations to protect the public and the environment; protect and manage natural resources.

Perform a wide variety of maintenance tasks such as repairing benches, tables, plumbing, sprinkler and water systems, playground equipment; maintain lawns and landscaped areas.

Respond to emergency situations and provide first aid when required. Clean and maintain swimming pools, park areas, buildings and related equipment; perform other light custodial maintenance as required.

Explain and interpret park features; develop, plan and implement recreation programs.

Organize and coordinate operations and activities of assigned program area; may direct the work of subordinate and seasonal employees as required.

Perform administrative tasks as directed; operate standard office equipment and computer applications.

Communicate with a wide variety of staff and members of the public in the course of work; may be required to resolve conflicts between park guests.

Operate county vehicles and light equipment in the performance of assigned duties.

As assigned, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; interview and select employees and recommend appointments, transfers, reassignments, terminations and disciplinary actions; establish work schedules, assign employee duties and review work to ensure accuracy, completeness and compliance with established standards, requirements and procedures.

Qualifications

Deal tactfully and effectively with the public and work cooperatively with others.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Learn the rules, regulations, policies and laws governing the operation of a county facility.

Follow safety rules and work in a safe manner.

Learn First Aid, CPR and use of Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

Perform medium to heavy physical labor and custodial work.

Operate vehicles and light maintenance equipment.

Maintain accurate records and complete standardized reports.

Develop and implement recreation and interpretive programs.

Supervise and evaluate the work of others as assigned.

Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.

Maintain a calm demeanor in stressful or emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:

Either A:

Two years of experience equivalent to a Park Ranger I.

OR B:

A bachelor degree from an accredited college or university in Recreation, Park or Natural Resources Management, Environmental Studies, Horticulture, Forestry or closely related field.

OR C:

An associate degree or 60 semester or 90 quarter units from an accredited college or university in any of the fields noted above AND two years of job‑related experience.

Licenses and Certificates When driving is an essential function of the position, a valid CALIFORNIA driver license will be required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

Must obtain and maintain valid Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED certificates or their equivalent within six months from date of appointment.

The recruitment may be used to fill future permanent, substitute, limited term, and temporary positions, both full‑time and part‑time throughout the County. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications and are best qualified will be invited to participate in selection activities which may include online assessments, performance exams, written exams and interviews.
