Colorado Department of Revenue . The Rifle Correctional Center is a 192-bed Level I minimum security facility located on a 75-acre site in rural Garfield County in Western Colorado. The facility opened in the 1960s as a satellite labor camp and has evolved to its current format. Programming includes secondary education, vocational training, and a reintegration program to reduce recidivism. Current CDOC CO I employees are encouraged to apply for transfers through the posted Central Transfer Process job announcement. Applicants are encouraged to review Administrative Regulations (AR) 100s and 300s series on the DOC website: https://cdoc.colorado.gov/about/department-policies. The assessment scores may be used for future announcements. This posting will be used to fill vacant positions at our Rifle location, with opportunities across CDOC.

Description Of Job / Responsibilities
The Correctional Officer I (CO I) maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities and supports the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values, including inmate preparation for community reentry. Officers communicate respectfully with inmates, families, coworkers, supervisors and the public, and work as a cohesive team to manage a diverse inmate population. Key duties include, but are not limited to:
Work directly with inmates in a locked facility
Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas
Man an armed post (annual firearms certification)
Monitor facility perimeter and detain unidentified pedestrians/vehicles
Operate doors, security devices, equipment and alarms
Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule
Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles
Monitor visiting areas
Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts
Maintain movement logs and conduct searches for contraband (including canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches)
Inspect facility and cells for health, safety and sanitation
Inspect inmate mail and property
Respond to emergencies and follow safety protocols
Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices
Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors
Positions may require working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain safety and security of 24/7 facilities.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions Of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum qualification
— High School Diploma or GED. Conditions of employment
Acknowledge and agree to Conditions of Employment within the application process
Legally eligible to work in the United States; CDOC uses E-Verify; CDOC does not sponsor non-residents
Must be at least 18 years old
Possess a valid, unrestricted driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record
Former state employees terminated or resigning in lieu of termination must disclose information; prior disciplinary termination may disqualify
No felony convictions as defined by policy; background investigation required
All offers contingent upon a health screening and successful completion of the basic training modules
Ability to complete Defensive Tactics and to be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum (pepper spray)
Willingness to work all shifts, weekends and holidays; able to report to work in inclement weather
Willingness and ability to use physical force and to work in a locked facility with fluctuating conditions
Willingness to travel/transport inmates in a state vehicle; TB screening required for all new employees

Ability to observe, hear and monitor inmate movements and security

Defensive tactics, firearms training, security device operation
Ability to follow chain of command and respond to emergencies
Ability to remain calm and resilient under pressure
Willingness to work with diverse populations and communicate with inmates, families and the public
