Overview
This posting will be used to fill vacant positions at our Crowley location. There are endless opportunities with the CDOC. Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility (AVCF) opened in August 1987. The facility is located just off of Highway 96 four miles west of Ordway and 40 miles east of Pueblo. AVCF is a Level III facility that manages a diverse population consisting of 1,089 medium custody inmates. The facility does have some specialized housing units. Restoring Promise Pod, a R.E.S.T.O.R.E pod, and an Incentive Living Unit. Current CDOC CO I employees are encouraged to apply for transfers through the posted Central Transfer Process job announcement. Applicants are encouraged to review the following series of Administrative Regulations (AR) to prepare for the comparative analysis process: 100s and 300s series. Position overview The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities across the state. CO I staff support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. They communicate with inmates, families, coworkers, supervisors, managers and the public, presenting a professional and dependable workforce. Positions require cooperation with other staff and the ability to work as a cohesive team while managing a diverse inmate population.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Work directly with inmates in a locked facility; Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas; Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required); Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles; Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms; Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule; Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles; Monitor visiting areas; Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts; Cross check and maintain movement logs; Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches); Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards; Inspect inmate mail and property; Respond to emergency situations (fights, medical emergencies, fires, escapes) using established protocols; Follow tool and key control procedures, ensure proper storage and documentation; Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices; Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors.
Note: Positions may require working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain safety and security of facilities that are open 24/7.
Minimum qualifications High School Diploma or GED certificate.

Must be at least 18 years of age; Possess a valid and unrestricted driver’s license; Former state employees terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose information and may be disqualified unless extraordinary circumstances apply; No felony convictions or disqualifying conduct as defined by policy; background investigation required. All offers contingent upon successful health screening. Successful completion of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, including English reading comprehension and defensive tactics assessments. Possess the physical ability to complete Defensive Tactics, including listed physical standards. Exposure to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and assignment. Willingness and ability to work all shifts, weekends and holidays; new officers will receive schedule after training. Willingness to use physical force as trained, and to work in a locked facility with varying conditions; ability to travel and transport inmates as required. TB screening is required on hire.
Required competencies Strong work ethic, accountability, integrity and dependability; Sound judgment and decision making; Strong interpersonal skills and teamwork; Excellent customer service and attention to detail; English language proficiency (reading, writing, speaking); Ability to observe, hear and communicate pertinent information; Ability to monitor inmate whereabouts and maintain accurate counts; Ability to follow chain of command and safety protocols; Knowledge of criminal justice concepts, ADA, PREA, and CDOC policies; Computer keyboarding and email communication skills; Ability to study information, recount events in writing, and apply CDOC mission; Ability to apply correctional methods to prepare inmates for community reentry; Respectful communication with inmates, families and the public; Ability to interact effectively in various situations and monitor inmates daily; Ability to conduct searches and operate security equipment; Willingness to work with firearms, restraints and security devices; willingness to be exposed to chemical agents; Ability to learn communications equipment operation; Ability to respond quickly to emergencies and to use force if necessary; Physical ability to climb stairs, walk on hard surfaces, and work outside in inclement weather; Willingness to adhere to the CDOC Drug Deterrence Program; Self-control and resilience in stressful situations.
