Overview
This Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) posting will be used to fill vacant positions at our Rifle location. The Rifle Correctional Center is a 192-bed Level I minimum security facility located on a 75-acre site in rural Garfield County in Western Colorado. The facility opened in the 1960s as a satellite labor camp and now provides a community-based labor service along with secondary education, vocational training, and a reintegration program to reduce recidivism. Current CDOC CO I employees are encouraged to apply for transfers through the posted Central Transfer Process job announcement. Applicants are encouraged to review Administrative Regulations (AR) 100 and 300 series to prepare for the comparative analysis process. Position: Correctional Officer I (CO I)
The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities. COs support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry. COs communicate professionally with inmates, families, coworkers, supervisors, managers and the public, and work as a cohesive team while managing a diverse inmate population.
Key duties include, but are not limited to:
Work directly with inmates in a locked facility;
Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas;
Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required);
Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles;
Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms;
Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule;
Escort and transport inmates in state vehicles;
Monitor visiting areas; conduct counts; cross-check and maintain movement logs;
Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches);
Inspect facility and cells for health, safety and sanitation; inspect inmate mail and property;
Respond to emergencies (fights, medical, fires, escapes); follow tool and key control protocols; attend roll calls; document incidents; communicate information to coworkers and supervisors.
Positions may require working additional hours and shifts to maintain 24/7 facility security.
Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or GED.
Conditions of Employment Applicants must acknowledge and agree to Conditions of Employment within the application process.
Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States; CDOC uses e-Verify. CDOC does not sponsor non-residents of the United States.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Possess a valid and unrestricted Colorado driver’s license and maintain a safe driving record; be able to safely operate a motor vehicle. See policy regarding driving standards and state vehicle use.
Former State employees with disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination must disclose details on the application.
Have no felony convictions, including actions defined in 5 U.S.C. 301; comply with PREA and related regulations.
Successful completion of a background investigation is required. Provide official dispositions for any charges as needed.
All job offers are contingent upon a health screening certifying the candidate can perform essential functions. Consent to hold harmless CDOC and its agents from liability related to testing.
Successfully complete all modules of the CDOC Basic Training, including English reading comprehension, competency assessments and relevant exams in Defensive Tactics; possess physical ability to complete Defensive Tactics.
Willingness to work all shifts, doubles, weekends and holidays; able to report to work during inclement weather. New COs will not be scheduled until after Basic Training.
Willing and able to use physical force and firearms training; able to work in a locked facility; able to travel and transport inmates as needed; TB screening required for new employees.

Ability to respond quickly to emergencies and work in diverse, potentially stressful environments;
Ability to remain alert, emotionally stable and resilient under pressure; tolerance to stress.
