The Amalgamated Sugar Company is seeking an Agricultural Research Agronomist to join our Sugarbeet Research (SBR) Team based in Nyssa, OR. This role is split between establishing, managing, and harvesting the Official Variety Trials and other research trials located in the Treasure Valley, as well as executing management-directed and self-driven research projects in the field and glasshouse. You will be a part of a team dedicated to contributing new knowledge to sugarbeet growers in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, enabling them to improve their sugarbeet productivity, profitability, and sustainability. This position reports to the Chief Scientist – Senior Plant Pathologist. Qualified candidates need to be dynamic and have the ability to work successfully in a fluid environment. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

In coordination with Variety Trial Specialist, assist with and execute the establishment of Official Variety Trials (OVTs) and other research projects in the field and glasshouse, including field preparation, trial design, field layout, planting, and applying fertilizer and pesticides Plan, execute and ensure that fieldwork is progressing as planned and that relevant work objectives and deadlines are met Conduct management-directed or self-driven research projects in the field and glasshouse within 2 years of starting date Day-to-day management of OVTs and field trials including fertility, weed spraying, insect and disease spraying, irrigating, and crop scouting Assist with collecting research trial data including evaluation of disease severity and weed counts Execute crop harvesting and data collection at harvest Maintain accurate records of all fieldwork and trial activities Road transport of research and farm equipment (loading, hauling and unloading) Operate research and farm equipment, including tractors, planters, sprayers, harvest equipment, etc. Ensure all activities are being conducted safely and contribute to improvements in safe work practices Basic maintenance and repair of research and farm equipment SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Administrative Support Assisting with procurement, purchase orders Supervision of field technicians Supervision of seasonal field staff as required ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

Considerable skills in the use of farm tractors, trailers, spray equipment, and basic farming implements, including loading, hauling and unloading, as well as some basic maintenance Considerable knowledge in growing sugar beets or comparable farming practices An eye for detail and the ability to strictly adhere to research protocols and methodologies Well-organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks/projects effectively Must be able to work independently without constant instruction, or to build one’s schedule Idaho or Oregon State driver’s license A current Idaho and Oregon State Pesticide Applicators license – or willingness to obtain both within 6 months of employment An Idaho or Oregon State Commercial Class A driver’s license (CDL) – or willingness to obtain one within 6 months of employment A commitment to workplace safety including a proactive approach to safe work practices and hazard reporting Must be able to work outside in very hot or cold conditions Able to travel out of town for work, including occasional overnight stays The ability to work under pressure at times while maintaining an even temperament Personal integrity and a desire to produce high-quality work Foster an environment that encourages teamwork and collaboration, both internally and externally MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

A bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in agronomy, soil, or plant science, or a closely related field and a minimum of 5 years of work-related experience are required Experience with farming operations and farm equipment is required Experience in growing sugar beets or comparable farming practices is required The ability to obtain and maintain a CDL and ID/OR pesticide applicator license is required OR any equivalent combination of experience and education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities WORK ENVIRONMENT

Must be able to work ou tdoors in varying weather conditions as required to complete job duties. Must have the physical ability of climbin g, crawling, and kneeling to complete job duties, and be able to lift and carry 50 pounds as needed.
