Under the general direction of a dean, an Instructor (Non-Contract/Temporary) provides comprehensive classroom instruction to students from diverse backgrounds to facilitate attainment of academic or vocational objectives. Instructors may be employed up to 67% of a full-time assignment in accordance with Education Code provisions. Who We Are

Representative Duties

Provide academic instruction to students through lectures, labs, or performance courses; assess and support cognitive abilities, communication skills, and higher-order thinking through assignments and activities in person, online, or distance-mediated settings. Advise and instruct students regarding programs of study, higher education options, lifelong learning resources, and effective study skills; refer students to support services and professionals as appropriate. Observe and evaluate student performance against course objectives and student learning outcomes; provide timely feedback to student inquiries in-class, online, or during office hours. Plan and organize instruction according to approved course outlines and student learning outcomes; align instruction with department, college, and district goals. Maintain accurate records of course enrollment, attendance, progress, curriculum, and outcomes; submit data and reports in a timely manner. Evaluate and select instructional materials; order materials to ensure timely delivery. Revise and update course content to reflect new theory and developments; update syllabi and assess measurable student performance indicators. May participate in curriculum development, committees, articulation, matriculation activities, and provide supervision to others as needed. Perform related duties as assigned. Note:

E = Essential Duties. Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for the discipline as approved by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors, defined in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges handbook. Required qualifications include one of the following: Master’s in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition; OR Bachelor’s in English, literature, or related field and Master’s in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism; OR Equivalent qualifications as determined by the district (see equivalency process); OR Possession of a valid California Community College Teaching Credential appropriate to the discipline. All coursework must be from an accredited college or university. If education was completed outside the United States, review the foreign transcripts section for additional information. Pay Philosophy and Salary Starting salaries for part-time faculty are based on educational achievement and relevant experience. Initial placement is within the starting salary range; advancement is based on longevity and educational growth. See the salary placement documentation for details.
