SUPERVISING FIRE PREVENTION ENGINEERING ASSISTANT - FIRE EMERGENCY

Los Angeles County Fire Department is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Supervising Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant under an emergency order in response to the county’s recent wildfire events. Application period is from October 15, 2025, 8:00 a.m. PT to October 28, 2025, 5:00 p.m. PT.
Job Summary The initial assignment is for a 90‑day probationary period with evaluation based on 100% performance. Successful candidates will be considered for permanent appointment as a Supervising Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant.
Responsibilities
Supervises a unit of fire prevention engineering assistants engaged in the review and approval of complex construction plans and inspection of building sites for compliance with fire protection codes and regulations.
Provides guidance to staff on complex plans (e.g., large county facilities, major sports arenas).
Investigates requests for Alternatives Means and Methods Review (AMMR) in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
Serves as a liaison between the Los Angeles County Fire Department, county and city agencies, water departments, building and planning departments, board of supervisors, owners, developers, architects, and engineers.
Attends professional fire prevention engineering conferences and participates in the investigation and analysis of legislative proposals or code development applicable to regulatory fire prevention activities.
Qualifications
OPTION I: Certificate of Registration as a Fire Protection Engineer and one (1) year of professional fire protection engineering experience.
OPTION II: Graduation from an accredited college with a specialization in civil engineering, fire protection engineering, fire protection administration or fire technology related field AND two (2) years of experience performing professional fire protection engineering work.
OPTION III: Two (2) years of experience at the level of Los Angeles County Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant II.
Valid California Class C Driver License or ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed for essential job functions.
Physical Class Physical Class 3 – Moderate. The incumbent must stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10‑25 pounds.
