The Los Angeles County Fire Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency
Supervising Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant
vacancies related to this unprecedented natural disaster.
Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.
During your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%. Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Supervising Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant.
Definition:
Supervises a unit of fire prevention engineering assistants engaged in the review and approval of complex construction plans and inspection of building sites for compliance with fire protection codes and regulations.
Classification Standards:
Positions allocable to this class report to a Head Fire Prevention Engineer or Battalion Chief and are responsible for supervising a unit of fire prevention engineering assistants in the Prevention Services Bureau. Incumbents are responsible through subordinates for checking building plans to ensure compliance with fire code ordinances and regulations; they are also responsible for the more difficult phases of complex fire protection planning. Incumbents must exercise knowledge of engineering principles, all applicable codes and regulations, and the principles of supervision in carrying out work assignments.
Essential Job Functions:
Supervises staff (e.g., Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant I and II, Fire Permit Technician) engaged in the approval of building, land subdivision, fire alarm system, or fire sprinkler system plans.
Reviews and provides guidance to staff for complex plans (e.g., So-Fi Stadium, Clippers arena, Universal Studios, large County facilities).
Investigates requests for Alternatives Means and Methods Review (AMMR) to applicable fire/building codes and standards.
Serves as a liaison between the Los Angeles County Fire Department and other county, city and public agencies (e.g., County/City, Water Departments, Building/Planning Department officials, Board of Supervisors) and applicants (e.g., owners, developers, architects, engineers).
Attends professional Fire Prevention Engineering conferences. Participates in the investigation and analysis of legislative proposals or code development applicable to regulatory Fire Prevention activities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Training And Experience:
OPTION I: A Certificate of Registration as a Fire Protection Engineer and one year’s professional fire protection engineering experience.
OPTION II: Graduation from an accredited college with specialization in civil engineering, fire protection engineering, fire protection administration or fire technology related field and two years’ experience performing professional fire protection engineering work.
OPTION III: Two years’ experience at the level of Los Angeles County Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant II.
You must meet at least one of the above requirements to be appointed to fill any vacancies related to this recruitment.
License:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Out-of-class Experience:
Out-of-Class experience will not be accepted for this examination.
Physical Class 3 - Moderate:
This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10–25 pounds.
