The Los Angeles County Fire Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Supervising Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant vacancies related to a disaster response. Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.
During your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.
Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Supervising Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant.
Responsibilities
Supervises a unit of fire prevention engineering assistants engaged in the review and approval of complex construction plans and inspection of building sites for compliance with fire protection codes and regulations.
Reviews and provides guidance to staff for complex plans (e.g., large facilities).
Investigates requests for Alternatives Means and Methods Review (AMMR) to applicable fire/building codes and standards.
Serves as a liaison between the Los Angeles County Fire Department and other county, city, and public agencies and applicants.
Attends professional Fire Prevention Engineering conferences and participates in the investigation and analysis of legislative proposals or code development applicable to regulatory Fire Prevention activities.
Definition Supervises a unit of fire prevention engineering assistants engaged in the review and approval of complex construction plans and inspection of building sites for compliance with fire protection codes and regulations.
Classification Standards Positions report to a Head Fire Prevention Engineer or Battalion Chief and supervise a unit in the Prevention Services Bureau. Incumbents check building plans for compliance with fire code ordinances and regulations and manage more difficult phases of complex fire protection planning. Requires knowledge of engineering principles, applicable codes and regulations, and supervisory principles.
Supervises staff (e.g., Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant I and II, Fire Permit Technician) in the approval of building, land subdivision, fire alarm system, or fire sprinkler system plans.
Reviews and provides guidance to staff for complex plans (e.g., large public facilities).
Investigates AMMR requests to applicable codes and standards.
Acts as liaison between the department and other agencies and applicants.
Attends professional conferences and participates in regulatory discussions.
Minimum Requirements TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
OPTION I:
A Certificate of Registration as a Fire Protection Engineer AND One year's professional fire protection engineering experience.
OPTION I I:
Graduation from an accredited college with specialization in civil engineering, fire protection engineering, fire protection administration or fire technology related field AND Two years' experience performing professional fire protection engineering work.
OPTION III:
Two years' experience at the level of Los Angeles County Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant II.
You MUST meet the above requirement(s) in order to be appointed to fill any vacancies related to this recruitment.
License A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Out-of-Class Experience Out-of-Class experience will not be accepted for this examination.
Physical Class Physical Class 3 - Moderate:
This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
Special Requirement Information To receive credit for your education, include a copy of your official diploma, official transcript, or letter/certificate from an accredited institution within five calendar days of filing your application. The document should show the date the degree was conferred and be in English. If it is in a foreign language, it must be translated and evaluated for equivalency to U.S. standards. Professional fire protection experience is defined as work in a professional occupation after receiving a bachelor’s degree or certificate of registration as a Fire Protection Engineer. Experience at the level of Fire Prevention Engineering Assistant II involves review and approval of complex construction plans, fire alarm and/or sprinkler plans, and inspection of building sites for compliance with fire protection codes and regulations.
Examination Content During your initial work period, the department will evaluate your performance. A passing score will lead to permanent appointment eligibility.
