The City of Grovetown is hiring a Light Equipment Operator in our Streets and Sanitation Department. This position pays $17.53 per hour. All full-time employees are eligible for 100% paid medical insurance, dental coverage, life insurance, short term disability, and paid retirement. JOB SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to perform daily tasks associated with street cleaning and maintenance, clearing/cleaning of City rights-of-way, clearing trash and debris, operating small engine equipment, power tools, and light trucks, and performing heavy physical labor under adverse conditions. Position requires training and experience normally associated with 6-12 months in a similar position. Duties include but are not limited to the following: Works as a member of the Streets and Sanitation crew Picks up garbage, refuse, and recyclables Picks up heavy trash and cleans area after pickup Pours and shovels asphalt or concrete to perform road repairs Repairs, rakes, and tamps asphalt or concrete used for patching holes Packs supplies needed at job site(s) Digs holes, unstops ditches, and clears debris that may stop water flow through street drains and pipes Uses sand, gravel, or other materials to patch holes Reacts to storm emergencies and assists other departments as needed Takes corrective action on missing/damaged street signs Uses safety equipment and materials as required Keeps equipment and vehicles in good operating order Participates in preparation work for special events of the City Performs other duties as assigned or required of the program Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of City geography including City maps/streets/locations Knowledge of appropriate materials used in patching roads Knowledge of City policies and procedures related to operation of the department Skill in operating small engine equipment such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, and edgers Skill in safe operation and driving of light and heavy trucks Skill in maintaining equipment Skill in using hand tools and power tools, such as chainsaws and pole saws Skill in performing basic safety regulations Skill in proactively noticing safety hazards in streets or rights-of-way and correcting problem(s) Ability to be cross-trained to perform other related duties Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time Ability to understand oral and written instructions Ability to read, write, and speak English Ability and skill to deal courteously and tactfully with fellow employees and the general public Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the general public. Complexity:
Employee follows established rules, guidelines, and policies and may make suggestions for updates or changes. Incumbent must have the ability to understand the scope, functions and job duties with minimal instruction. Job is complex due to the sheer volume of debris to be cleaned each week. Contacts:
Contacts are generally with City employees and members of the general public. The purpose of these contacts is to render services, provide, or exchange information to the general public. Guidelines:
Guidelines of the program are clear and specific and may require minimal interpretation. Grant guidelines are clear and specific. Incumbent receives instructions from work orders and verbal commands from the supervisor. Physical Demands:
Position requires frequent lifting (of items weighing more than 50 pounds), bending, stooping, crouching, crawling, and working overhead. Incumbent must be in good physical condition and be able to tolerate long periods of time working in extreme heat or cold and other adverse weather conditions. Supervisory Controls:
This position works under the direct supervision of the Streets and Sanitation Supervisor and receives training from the same. Work is somewhat routine and work details are explained at the beginning of the work assignment. Supervisor would monitor work performance during and after work assignment. Work Environment:
Work is typically performed on streets, roads, rights-of-way, and in outdoor areas in an uncontrolled environment. There is much exposure to noise, dirt, dust, grease, grime, contaminated trash, and infectious disease. Requirements: Employee must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license Employee must have at least six months' experience working in public setting Employee must possess a high school diploma Employee must be at least 18 years of age Employee subject to a pre-employment background check and drug screen Employee must follow all policies, rules, and regulations of the City Submit a completed City application and supporting documents to Human Resources, City of Grovetown, P.O.
