Overview

Police Recruit: Starting salary is $60,147 until completion of training. Upon completion of field training and progression to Police Officer status, the salary increases to $62,751 and, after receipt of the Step 2 increase, to $64,163. New officers hired before January 1 will be eligible for a step increase at the new fiscal year; those hired after January 1 will receive their step increase the following fiscal year. Salary increases as outlined above and are contingent on successful completion of training and receipt of the Step 2 increase. Eligibility

US citizen High school diploma or GED At least 21 years of age prior to completion of the field training program Active applicant in the naturalization process must receive approval from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) prior to employment; otherwise the applicant will be automatically disqualified. Requirements

Pass a physical agility test Possess or be eligible for a Virginia driver's license with no more than six demerit points in the past twelve months or a DUI conviction within the past four years Binocular vision of 20/25 corrected; weight in proportion to height No conviction of felonies and/or habitual misdemeanors; no misdemeanor sex offense or domestic assault conviction, guilty plea, or no contest plea Extensive background investigation, including a polygraph, psychological, medical and drug screening; pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required Position is considered Critical Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug testing and alcohol testing; use of illegal drugs or medical marijuana prohibited; employees must not consume or be under the influence of alcohol while on duty, on work premises, or operating agency equipment Subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice's Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy and requires a more stringent criminal background check Responsibilities

Operate an assigned patrol vehicle Patrol assigned areas of the county for traffic and criminal violations; respond to citizen calls, complaints, and requests for information Conduct victim, witness, and suspect interviews; prepare detailed reports Make arrests; testify in court; interact with community groups and organizations; perform other police patrol operations in the field as assigned and as needed Details
