Police Officer Recruitment
Starting salary is $60,147 until completion of training. Upon completion of field training and progression to Police Officer status, the salary increases to $62,751. New officers hired before January 1 will be eligible for a step increase at the new fiscal year. New hires after January 1 will receive their step increase the following fiscal year. Upon completion of field training and receipt of the Step 2 increase, the salary increases to $64,163. Qualifications include: Must be a US citizen High school diploma or GED At least 21 years of age prior to completing the field training program Pass a physical ability test Virginia driver's license with no more than six demerit points in the past 12 months or a DUI conviction within the past four years Binocular vision of 20/25 corrected Weight proportionate to height No felony or habitual misdemeanor convictions No conviction or plea of misdemeanor sex offense or domestic assault Successful completion of extensive background investigation, including polygraph, psychological, medical, and drug screening This position is considered Critical Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing. The use of medical marijuana is prohibited. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, and education verification are required. The position requires passing a stringent criminal background check due to high-security area requirements governed by the CJIS Security Policy. Job Responsibilities
Operate an assigned patrol vehicle Patrol assigned areas for traffic and criminal violations Respond to citizen calls, complaints, and requests Conduct victim, witness, and suspect interviews Prepare detailed reports Make arrests and testify in court Interact with community groups and organizations Perform other patrol operations as assigned Note:

Shifts are permanently assigned based on department needs; candidates must be able to work any shift, including overnights and weekends if assigned.
