Agency Adult Correction, Division: Correctional Food Service Officer I, II, III. Position Number: NC05. Grade: NC05.

Description of Work NOW ELIGIBLE FOR A $3,000 SIGN ON BONUS!

To be eligible for a sign-on bonus, the candidate must not have worked as a probationary, permanent, or time-limited employee in the last 12 months as an employee subject to the State Human Resources Act. Hires with a start date prior to July 1, 2025 are eligible for a $7,000 Sign On Bonus. All hires with a start date on July 1, 2025, or after are eligible for a $3,000 Sign On Bonus. This position is also eligible for the Applicant Referral Bonus ($1,000).

Salary Range per Classification

Correctional Food Service Officer I: $32,639 - $57,117

Correctional Food Service Officer II: $34,270 - $59,973

Correctional Food Service Officer III: $35,984 - $62,971

Responsibilities Correctional Food Service Officers supervise offenders performing large-scale food production and food service operations at a correctional institution/facility. Key duties include:

Supervising offenders in assigned food preparation and food service work areas, including cooking, baking, and serving food to the offender population.

Managing inventory levels of all food and supplies requiring rotation; ensuring timely ordering of food products and cleaning supplies.

Maintaining all food service equipment and understanding menu specifications.

Ensuring sanitary food handling practices and applying knowledge of nutritional values.

Prioritizing effective communication in verbal and written forms and adhering to instructions.

Adhering to computer data accuracy and operational success.

Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience

High school or GED diploma and one year of experience in institutional food preparation and food services, in management of a commercial food service operations, or as a Correctional Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience for Officer I.

For Officer II, high school or GED and two years of experience; for Officer III, high school or GED and three years of experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications

Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Management preferences: Considerable knowledge of large-scale food production and food service activities in institutional or commercial environments.

Trainee Appointment

If no qualified candidates, a trainee who does not meet minimum requirements may be considered; salary may be set at a lower level and adjusted up as the trainee gains required education and experience.

Work Schedule This is a full‑time position. Employees must be able to work any shift, including rotating, fixed, split shift. All shifts may include days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required. State benefits are provided.
