Position Details
Position Title: Claims Supervisor III – Property & Casualty Department: Property & Casualty Reports To: Claims Manager Property & Casualty FLSA Status: Exempt Job Grade: 16
Responsibilities
Oversee a team handling a caseload of School/JPA takeover claims and new loss assignments in CA. Manage a unit of mid-level and senior examiners handling claims of moderate to severe complexity involving bodily injury, property damage, occurrence or claims made and complex coverage. Exposures typically valued at levels exceeding 10K, or as high as self-insured or excess layer limits. Handle multiple coverage lines with a concentration on high exposure Auto, GL and Professional liability involving school districts. Oversee a team handling premise liability and related processes, including IEPs, abuse, molestation, assault, educators/administrators, Directors and Officers or other officials. Plan, schedule, and supervise the unit's activities in reviewing, analyzing, investigating, negotiating, and settling claims in compliance with standards and expectations. Review claim loss reports and assign claims to appropriate personnel; serve as a technical resource for staff. Approve, within authority limits, claim expenses and settlements; refer matters exceeding authority for approval. Oversee complex litigation and coverage cases; act as primary liaison between examiners and clients. Interpret coverage matters and review reservation of rights and disclaimers for carrier approval. Monitor reserves for claims and adjust as needed within established time frames. Conduct regular reviews of pending/closed files to identify improvements and needs for staff training. Prepare monthly reports on quality control, pending/closed files, and reserve activity. Stay informed of legislation and trends in claims litigation to ensure compliance and recommend process changes. Participate in special projects and assist with hiring, training, and staff development; manage relationships with clients and vendors. Ensure consistency in claims coding and collaborate with management to meet budget targets. Support management in achieving company initiatives and performance goals; address client policy and procedure questions as needed.
Accountabilities & Supervisory Responsibilities
Provide direct supervision to examiners, adjusters, claims assistants, and liability claims staff. Review and approve direct report monthly expense reports within authority.
Essential Position Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent required; AA/AS or BA/BS preferred but not required. Licenses: domiciled state license and at least one license in NY, TX, or FL preferred; additional California designation may be required within 180 days; maintain licenses and continuing education in all states. 8+ years’ experience in a claims lead or supervisor position; mid-to-high exposure Auto, GL and Professional Liability claims experience. Extensive knowledge of school/JPA operating structure, claims procedures, litigation management, client reporting, and multi-line exposure. Strong leadership, communication, and people-management skills; ability to manage complex cases and staff performance. Proficiency with claims handling systems, Microsoft Office, and ability to learn additional programs. Ability to plan, prioritize, and organize claims workload; work independently and in teams; maintain confidentiality. Willingness to travel as required; ability to attend in-person meetings in Ventura County as needed.
