Athens Administrators is seeking a full-time Claims Supervisor II to support public entity and special district accounts for our Property & Casualty department. The role requires residence in California to attend file reviews and meetings. Management that lives within 36 miles of the Concord or Orange offices and has a direct report in the office is required to work once a week in the office; remaining days may be remote if technical requirements are met. Office hours: Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. local time. Schedule: Monday through Friday at 37.5 hours per week. Base pay range:
$127,500.00/yr - $135,000.00/yr . Position details, department and leadership structure are described below. Primary Responsibilities
Oversee a team handling a caseload of general liability and commercial auto claims and new loss assignments venued in California. Manage a unit of low to mid-level experienced examiners, handling property damage and bodily injury with reportable exposures valued at $50K or higher for public entities and special districts. Oversee lower-level litigation and coverage cases that may emerge from the unit’s inventory; handle these matters within the group as needed. Plan, schedule, and supervise unit activities in reviewing, analyzing, investigating, negotiating, and settling claims in line with established standards. Monitor liability and due process procedures claims, review loss reports, assess claim complexity, and assign to appropriate personnel to optimize handling; serve as a technical resource as necessary. Review and approve expenses and settlements within authority limits; escalate as needed for higher authority. Handle multiple coverage lines with emphasis on low to mid-level GL and Auto exposure for public risk and special district accounts when required. Monitor and evaluate reserves; ensure adequacy and timely adjustments. Conduct regular desk reviews of pending and closed files to identify improvement needs and provide training and development guidance. Prepare monthly reports on quality control, pending/closed files, and reserve activity to track unit performance. Maintain awareness of legislation and trends to ensure compliance with the Fair Claims Practices Act and recommend process changes. Participate in special projects and work with management to achieve budget targets and drive performance. Collaborate with clients and vendors; participate in hiring, training, performance management, and staff development as needed. Attend client and company meetings; conduct claim reviews with clients, carriers, and stakeholders; ensure consistent and accurate claims coding within the unit. Accountabilities & Supervisory Responsibilities
Provide direct supervision to examiners, claims assistants, and all liability claims staff. Review and approve direct report’s monthly expenses and related operating costs for the assigned unit. Essential Position Requirements
High School Diploma or equivalent required; AA/AS or BA/BS preferred but not required. CA license required; other licenses (e.g., NY, TX, FL) preferred; additional state licenses may be required within 180 days; maintain licenses and continuing education in all states. 5+ years’ experience in a claims lead or supervisor position. Low to mid-level exposure to commercial Auto and GL claims for public entities or special districts. Strong judgment, analytical ability, and experience handling low to mid-level casualty claims; familiarity with public risk and special districts operations preferred. Knowledge of claims procedures, litigation management, client reporting and multi-line exposures; proficiency in CA statutes and regulatory requirements; strong claims systems knowledge and coverage investigation skills. People management, training, performance evaluation, and staff development capabilities. Strong communication, presentation, relationship-building, and conflict resolution skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office; ability to learn additional programs and manage workload; strong organizational skills to meet deadlines. Ability to work independently and in a team; handle confidential information with integrity; flexible and positive attitude aligned with Athens values.
