This position supports excise tax compliance and advisory projects for clients across industries including Oil & Gas, Transportation, Manufacturing and Retail. The compliance scope covers US Federal and State excise tax filings, including fuel tax obligations. Advisory work includes due diligence reviews, structuring assistance, licensing research and consultation, controversy support, interpretation and guidance on new legislation, and reviewing related correspondence prepared by junior staff. Examples include air transportation excise tax, alcohol and tobacco excise tax, the PCORI fee, Superfund excise tax, and firearms/ammunition excise tax. This role also coaches and develops others on the team. Your Key Responsibilities You’ll contribute to a diverse range of projects and activities, engaging with team members, delivering a quality work product, and ensuring timely delivery. You will provide lead compliance support to the engagement team, supervise and evaluate assigned seniors and analysts, communicate with clients, provide tax technical recommendations, and resolve engagement issues. You’ll work in a collaborative culture where sharing information with colleagues is essential. Responsibilities Include Demonstrate an understanding of excise tax concepts and apply tax knowledge to client situations Support the team in developing and delivering quality tax planning with timely services and outputs that meet or exceed client expectations Assist in identifying and engaging clients for excise tax compliance, planning, and other services Prepare practical approaches to the client’s tax situation and reach appropriate conclusions Develop recommendations and implementation plans and make informed decisions in complex areas Stay current on trends, developments and legislation impacting clients Research complex tax issues and develop practical solutions Administrative Function Lead and coach team members in managing engagement lifecycle and engagement economics for the practice Responsible for financial and economic health of managed engagements Skills and Attributes for Success Ability to lead client discussions, monitor commitments and deadlines, and drive the internal team to completion Collaborate with clients and colleagues to analyze tax issues and recommend solutions Support the compliance team with data analysis and benchmarking for compliance and tax calculations Apply independent and objective decision making to tasks Ask questions when needed and know when to proceed Receive direction from more senior team members and occasionally from project managers Ability to analyze federal and state statutes and related regulations and convey conclusions to team and clients Minimum qualifications Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance or equivalent Minimum of 5+ years of experience in a professional services or tax environment Excellent organizational and verbal/written communication skills Strong time management and ability to work in a fast-paced environment Strong research skills and proficiency with Westlaw, CCH, RIA, etc. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail Solid knowledge of excise tax concepts Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint Willingness to travel as needed and work in a hybrid environment Preferred qualifications CPA, EA, or JD/LLM (not required) What We Look For We’re looking for tax professionals who are committed to delivering outstanding services to clients and working with people from diverse backgrounds.
