EDGE Indirect Excise Tax Manager --Open Location Location: Anywhere in Country At EY, we’re all in to shape your future with confidence. This role supports excise tax compliance and advisory projects for clients in various industries, including Oil & Gas, Transportation, Manufacturing and Retail. The team provides specialized tax technical services in the US and globally as part of EY EDGE (Exceptional Delivery and Growth Engine). This position covers US Federal and State excise tax filings (including fuel tax) and advisory support such as due diligence, structuring assistance, licensing research, controversy support, interpretation of new legislation, and review of related correspondence prepared by junior staff. Examples of taxes include air transportation excise tax, alcohol and tobacco excise tax, PCORI fee, Superfund excise tax, and firearms/ammunition excise tax. You may also coach and develop others on the team.
Your Key Responsibilities
Lead compliance support to the engagement team, supervising and evaluating assigned seniors & analysts and their work product Communicate with clients, provide tax technical recommendations and resolve engagement issues Participate in day-to-day client engagements in a collaborative culture
Responsibilities Include
Demonstrate an understanding of excise tax concepts and apply tax knowledge to client situations Develop and deliver quality tax planning approaches with timely services and work products Identify and engage clients in opportunities for excise tax compliance, planning and other services Prepare practical approaches to client tax situations and arrive at appropriate conclusions Develop recommendations and implementation plans; make informed decisions in complex areas Keep up to date on trends, developments and legislation affecting clients Research advanced tax issues and develop practical solutions
Administrative Function
Lead and coach team members in managing engagement lifecycle and economics Responsible for financial and economic health of managed engagement
Skills and Attributes for Success
Ability to lead client discussions, monitor commitments and deadlines, and drive internal teams to completion Collaborate with clients and colleagues to analyze tax issues and recommend solutions Support compliance teams with data analysis and benchmarking for compliance and tax calculations Apply independent and objective decision making Know when to ask questions or proceed with tasks Receive direction from more senior team members Ability to analyze federal and state statutes and regulations and communicate conclusions
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree (Accounting, Business, Finance or equivalent preferred) Minimum of 5+ years of experience in professional services or tax services Excellent organizational and verbal/written communications skills Effective time management; ability to work in a fast-paced professional environment Strong research skills (Westlaw, CCH, RIA, etc.) Strong analytical skills and attention to detail Effective knowledge of excise tax concepts Proficiency with Word, Excel and PowerPoint Willingness to travel and work in a balanced hybrid environment
Preferred
CPA, EA, or JD/LLM (not required)
