Overview
The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office is hiring for a position within the January 2026 In-House Mini Academy. The role involves performing a variety of complex law enforcement duties, enforcing Federal and State laws and County ordinances, and working under the general supervision of a Sergeant. This is an appointed position that works at the pleasure of the Sheriff. Salary and Benefits
The 2025 hiring range is $79,539 – $108,118 annually. Salary depends on education and/or experience. All candidates hired for this academy will receive a $2,250 sign-on bonus, plus up to $800.00 a month for childcare reimbursement during initial training while grant funds are available (conditions apply). Benefits include medical, dental, retirement plan, and paid time off. The 401(a) defined benefit retirement plan contributions are described in detail by the county. You must be Colorado P.O.S.T. certified by December 31, 2025, to be eligible for this position. Applicants will be required to pass a physical fitness test. The department notes that Arapahoe County Sheriff\'s Office will not send candidates to a P.O.S.T. Academy for this position. You must provide a current valid email address for application status notifications. Essential Functions (illustrative)
Performs routine patrol duties to prevent, detect, and respond to suspicious or illegal activity and responds to calls for service (emergency and non-emergency). Conducts initial investigations of crime scenes/incidents to obtain pertinent facts and information. Conducts interviews of witnesses, victims, participants, or suspects at the scene. Collects and preserves evidence and property at incidents. Arrests suspects involved in misdemeanor/felony activity; writes citations for minor violations. Prepares reports, forms, and documents related to patrol activities. Operates in-car computer systems to write reports, self-dispatch, obtain history and in-house records. Provides testimony in court as needed. Provides assistance and support to persons in need during emergencies. Maintains safety standards and complies with Sheriff\'s Office policies; reports safety violations. Maintains regular attendance and is willing to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as required. Follows the mission, values, and policies of the Sheriff\'s Office. Interacts effectively with others and exercises good judgment in sensitive situations. May perform Sergeant-level duties in the absence of a Sergeant and may act as incident commander when necessary. May be assigned other duties as needed. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Working knowledge of law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment. Working knowledge of agency policies and procedures; Federal and State law and County ordinances. Ability to maintain firearms proficiency and to operate a County vehicle safely. Ability to apply community policing concepts and problem-solving partnerships with neighborhoods. Ability to use related office and field equipment and to use computers as required by the position. Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written English and to remain calm in emergencies. Ability to physically subdue and control unruly subjects and to perform duties requiring good psychological and physical condition. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders. Ability to pass established annual physical testing and meet required certifications. Education:
High School graduate or GED equivalent. Experience:
No specific experience required, or any equivalent combination of education and experience approved by the Sheriff. Certifications / Licenses:
Colorado P.O.S.T. certification. Preferred Qualifications
College coursework in criminal justice. 2 years of experience working as a peace officer. Necessary Special Requirements
Must possess current CPR and First Aid certifications within probationary period. Must possess a valid Colorado Driver\'s License. Must be 21 years of age. Must be able to work rotating shifts, weekends and holidays. Must possess current Colorado P.O.S.T. certification, or out-of-state equivalent. Physical Demands
The physical demands are described as follows (not all-inclusive): Spends 60% of the time sitting and 40% standing/walking/running. Must possess strength to carry a person (approx. 150 lbs). Must be able to push/pull, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, handle and feel; restrain subjects as needed. Communicate verbally and in writing; operate radios and phones; visual requirements for weapons and equipment; color vision; olfactory capacity for hazard detection. EEO and Applicant Information:
