General Summary & Scope The Assistant Services Manager (ASM) is responsible for leading Ulta Beauty’s mission, vision, and values to develop a high-performing team that delivers sales growth in hair and skin services. The ASM supports the Experience Manager (EM) in leading a team of stylists and estheticians and is accountable for all aspects of the services business, including services and merchandise sales, events around hair and skin, guest satisfaction, and operational excellence while also working behind the chair providing services to guests in the salon. This leader drives performance (service sales and productivity), people (guest experience and associate culture), and process (operating procedures and compliance standards). The role requires drive for results, passion for the beauty industry, exceptional guest service, the ability to lead and influence, and the aptitude to learn and teach service technique and product knowledge.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions The ASM demonstrates Ulta Beauty’s mission, vision, and values by performing the following duties and responsibilities and other assigned projects/duties:
Perform salon hair services, makeup applications, skincare analysis, and product demonstrations with guests.
Achieve individual productivity goals each week.
Promote a culture of accountability to meet or exceed the store’s goals related to service and merchandise sales, guest loyalty (including credit), payroll, omni-channel, and retail shrink as set by Ulta Beauty for the store.
Drive company profitability through operational excellence, top-line sales growth, and expense control.
Support the planning and execution of services events that deliver an exceptional guest experience, drive brand partner collaboration, and achieve sales and payroll goals.
Review, analyze, and react to Ulta Beauty’s financial and operational reporting, including services visits and audit results.
Address underperforming metrics related to the store’s service sales and develop strategies to improve and grow these areas using company programs, tools, and resources.
Stay informed about new and existing industry trends, products, and services to better serve guests.
Maintain prompt, regular attendance as the ASM and hold all services associates accountable to Ulta Beauty attendance policy.
People
Support in attracting, hiring, and retaining a diverse team of service professionals using a variety of methods and address staffing needs for the salon.
Build a highly engaged team through collaboration, open communication, prioritization of work, and coaching to drive guest loyalty.
Train, coach, and develop services professionals using company programs, tools, and resources.
Create an inclusive environment that supports growth and engagement of associates and ensure attendance at required training and classes.
Support professional development, including training, feedback, coaching, succession planning, and development plans to drive sales performance.
Establish professional relationships with peers and brand partners to collaboratively achieve sales and service goals.
Promote a culture of service excellence among the leadership team by sharing best practices and providing support.
Process
Know and comply with Ulta Beauty’s policies, procedures, and standards for the store.
Regularly review and respond to company communications in a timely manner.
Adhere to Ulta Beauty’s dress code.
Manage salon supply inventory and the ordering process, staying within budget and ensuring necessary products are available.
Use the company’s task management tool to prioritize and execute store workload including product and marketing resets, pricing updates, inventory tasks, cleaning, and replenishment.
Protect company assets and minimize loss by meeting store standards and operating procedures, including safety, inventory control, and loss prevention.
Support continuous improvement by adopting company initiatives and technology and communicating expectations.
Assist the Experience Manager and General Manager in scheduling service associates to optimize traffic and productivity.
Job Qualifications Education
Cosmetology school graduate
Cosmetology license and/or cosmetology management license where required by state law
Experience
2 – 3+ years of relevant, fast-paced salon management experience or other relevant work experience
Knowledge of state board of cosmetology regulations and hiring requirements
Experience in financial management: driving top-line sales, interpreting reporting data, managing payroll budgets, and controlling expenses
Experience in leadership: attracting, developing, and motivating top talent, adapting to change, and leading others through change
Skills
Proficiency with latest salon techniques for haircutting, color, styling, makeup, and services as applicable, with the ability to develop skills across service categories
Proficient with basic technology (POS, Microsoft Office, and Apple devices)
Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills
Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks
Ability to work under pressure, exercise good judgment in ambiguous situations, and be flexible
Special Position Requirements
Work a flexible, full-time schedule including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays
Attend corporate meetings and conferences
Working conditions: continuous mobility throughout the store, frequent standing, bending, reaching, and twisting
Continuous lifting up to 10 lbs and manipulation of objects during shift
Frequent use of computer and related office equipment
