Overview The Controller and Special Projects will provide oversight and leadership to the finance and revenue cycle teams. This includes supervision of functions such as accounts payable, payroll, general ledger, financial reporting, registration/scheduling, billing, coding, collections, and revenue cycle analysis. This role ensures compliance with accreditation standards, federal, state, and local regulations, and internal policies. This role will also assume temporary responsibility for the day-to-day management and oversight of the Director of Revenue’s book of work and staff while out on leave. This role will report directly to the CFO with personnel management of the Director of Finance and the team members for the Director of Revenue.

Responsibilities

Leadership: Lead and guide both the finance and revenue cycle teams, including recruitment, hiring, performance evaluation, and professional development. Engage in and lead departmental priorities and hospital strategic priorities through goal completion within the Revenue Cycle and Finance departments. Provide coaching and mentorship opportunities to aid these departments in reaching identified goals. Organize and chair the Denial Committee. Participate in the Leadership Team and cross-departmental committees such as the Compliance Committee, Utilization Review Committee, Growth and Optimization Committee, Medical Records Review Committee and Electronic Health Record Steering Committee. Foster a collaborative work environment and mission-aligned culture across disciplines and hospital departments.

Regulatory and Compliance: Work with the Compliance Officer and external partners to ensure continuous compliance with CMS Conditions of Participation in coding/billing and state Medicare/Medicaid as well as private payer insurance. Oversee collaborative payroll implementation between the Finance Department and Human Resources; ensure payroll is conducted in accordance with local, state and federal rules. Ensure financial compliance using GAAP rules to promote accuracy, transparency, consistency and reportability. Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations and oversee protection of PHI standards across hospital operations.

Analysis & Reporting: Monitor and analyze operating margins in support of financial planning; conduct routine financial analysis and provide strategic insights; optimize payor contracts and support reimbursement strategies; monitor and track KPI. Assist in the preparation and review of finance-related regulatory deliverables (e.g., Annual Audits, 403(b), 990, cost reports). Evaluate opportunities for continuous improvement with departmental leaders (e.g., streamline processes, cost savings). Routinely report to the CFO and the Executive Team on analyses and reports.

Qualifications Required

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or Healthcare Administration

Minimum 8 years of progressive accounting and/or revenue cycle experience; healthcare and nonprofit experience preferred

Certified Patient Account Representative (CPAR) and/or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) preferred

Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial/revenue systems (e.g., Great Plains, Prophix, UKG)

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills and ability to translate to lay-persons for implementation

Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

Ability to manage competing demands and maintain confidentiality (HIPAA compliance)

Demonstrated leadership in customer relations and cross-functional collaboration

Physical Demands Includes sitting, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, grasping, pulling, pushing, standing, carrying, and lifting of light loads (up to 35 lbs).
