Description Of Work
U.S. grasslands are on the verge of a unified, large-scale conservation movement. This initiative, funded by the National Park Service (NPS), launches a major effort to advance grassland conservation across the Great Plains. Spanning 10 states and multiple National Parks, the project integrates science, planning, and on-the-ground implementation. It connects a diverse network of collaborators—including federal and state agencies, NGOs, private landowners, and academic institutions—to improve the visibility of grasslands, scale collaborative management across public-private boundaries, and communicate the value of grassland ecosystems to society.
Responsibilities
Lead development of a multi-state conservation strategy focused on America’s National Parks.
Develop and implement standardized scientific approaches across project sites
Analyze, interpret and communicate conservation outcomes
Identify and evaluate legacy landscapes for public-facing conservation efforts
Provide operational leadership, including strategic planning, financial oversight and public relations for the project
Publish results in journals and translate science for public audiences
Coordinate and collaborate with National Park Service site managers, partner organizations, and local conservation networks
This position requires travel to National Park sites. Within the UNL system, this position is categorized as a Research Manager II.
Out-of-state work locations are evaluated based on comparability to Nebraska’s tax, payroll, workers compensation, and other laws and policies. In certain locations where state laws are not comparable to those in Nebraska (non-comparable states), requests for relocation of current employees or the hiring of new employees will be critically evaluated by the University and can be denied.

Minimum Required Qualifications
PhD in natural resources, ecology, environmental science, or related field plus 2 years of related experience.
Demonstrated success in leading peer-reviewed scientific publications.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Willingness to travel periodically across the Great Plains.
Valid driver’s license and ability to meet University driver eligibility requirements.
Preferred Qualifications The following qualifications are preferred, but not required:
Experience in budget management and grant reporting.
Experience coordinating large, multi-partner conservation or research projects.
Familiarity with spatial analysis and remote sensing, especially in rangeland or grassland systems.
Strong organizational skills and a mission-driven approach to conservation work.
