Pay Transparency:

Job Summary The Financial Counselor ensures that coverage is financially cleared for all emergency inpatient and observation services by reviewing insurance eligibility and benefits. Responsibilities include creating estimates and upfront cash collection as needed. Interacts with patients, families, visitors, nursing staff and medical personnel. Identifies payment sources, including patient payment and referrals for government programs (e.g., Medicaid and Charity Care). Daily tasks include inpatient and observation account review, authorization and benefit determination, creating estimates, and collecting point-of-service cash when appropriate. When applicable, provides timely referrals for state medical assistance programs.
Responsibilities
Take actions to maximize collection of balances due and account resolution from all sources, meeting quality and productivity expectations.
Facilitate account resolution by identifying and correcting billing errors, denials, or other issues to minimize time and effort to resolution, following the priority matrix.
Research and resolve issues causing delays in payment or resolution; identify opportunities to improve collections and follow-up activities.
Collaborate across teams, peers, and revenue cycle departments.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required within one year of hire. Candidates without a diploma may enroll in a GED/HSEA program at time of hire and have up to one year to complete.
4 years of similar hospital billing or accounting experience.
Knowledge of Charity Care, Uncompensated Care, and Medicaid guidelines and regulations.
Knowledge of medical terminology and insurance verification preferred.
Detail-oriented with computer experience; minimum of three years insurance authorization/pre-certification experience.
Knowledge of insurance verification, pricing, and collections (TOS).
Prior hospital admissions experience preferred.
Effective communication skills; bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
Preferred
Experience with insurance verification, cash collections, and obtaining Notices of Admission (NOA).
Knowledge of insurance clearance processes.
Scheduling Requirements
Full-time
Monday through Friday, 8:00 am–4:00 pm on site
Rotating every other weekend (8:00 am–4:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday) and rotating holidays
Essential Functions
Support maximization of balance collections and account resolution; meet quality and productivity expectations.
Identify and resolve billing errors, low reimbursement, or denials for submission/resubmission to patients or insurers; prioritize actions to resolve accounts efficiently.
Identify, research, and resolve factors delaying payment; propose improvements to collections and follow-up activities.
Work collaboratively across teams and revenue cycle departments.
