Organizational Unit Overview The Division of General Pediatrics of the East Carolina University School of Medicine is the organizational unit. The primary purpose of the Pediatric Department is teaching, research and patient care in those issues involving the needs of children, with particular emphasis on the children of eastern North Carolina. The

Children's Advocacy Center specializes in child abuse and neglect and provides: 1) comprehensive evaluation of children who have been referred because of suspected abuse and/or neglect; 2) evidence-based interventions for abused children and their non-offending caregivers through therapy and clinical case management 3) community support and resources to build and strengthen interagency response and interventions for children at risk for abuse/neglect 4) education and training for professionals, students, and the community at large within Eastern North Carolina in the areas of child abuse evaluation, intervention, treatment, and prevention; 5) advocacy and influencing policy development to promote the health and wellness of abused and neglected children.

Job Duties As an advanced level clinical provider, this person will extend the services of the General Pediatrics Division and the

TEDI

BEAR

program. The physician extender will be involved in providing comprehensive evaluations for children suspected of being abused and/or neglected by obtaining a history and performing necessary examinations including colposcopy and labs, and participate (with the interdisciplinary team) in the final assessment and recommendations. Communication with law enforcement and social service agencies is an important duty; occasional court testimony is required. The medical director of the

program or another of the attending pediatricians who participate in the

TEDI

BEAR

program or other medical provider will be available for training, consultation, and review to the extent necessary. This provider will also be involved in the teaching of medical students and residents in clinical settings. Opportunities may be provided within the Division of General Pediatrics depending upon need, experience, and interest. These may include any of the following: provision of primary care pediatric services, especially health maintenance provision; primary adolescent health care; and assistance in division research activities.

Health Medical Center, which serves as its teaching hospital, as well as the flagship hospital for

Minimum Education/Experience Graduation from a physician assistant program approved by the N.C. Board of Medical Examiners and "approved to practice medical acts" based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners and two years of experience in the specialty area of assignment; or licensed as a registered nurse by the Board of Nursing and graduation from a nurse practitioner program approved by the N.C. Joint Subcommittee, and two years of experience in the specialty area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification required by statute or regulation Approved to practice medical acts based on education and experience by the NC Board of Medical Examiner OR Licensed by the NC Board of Nursing.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education Training and/or experience with pediatric populations. Thorough knowledge of child abuse/neglect evaluation with experience providing child abuse evaluations is preferred.

License or Certification required by the Department Approved to practice medical acts based on education and experience by the NC Board of Medical Examiner OR Licensed by the NC Board of Nursing
