NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 19,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving the lives and property of its citizens through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration, Compliance & Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission, and Rehabilitation & Reentry.
Description of Work Salary Range: $37,621-$54,078 Salary Grade: NC05-NC07 All hires are eligible for a $3,000 Sign on Bonus. Additionally, positions are eligible for employee referral bonus program ($1,000).

This pay-plan offers competitive starting salaries and guaranteed annual increases based on each year of experience as a North Carolina Correctional Officer. Those with prior North Carolina Correctional Officer experience can return to employment with full credit in the pay plan for each year of experience as well.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities / Management Preferences
Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
Required Applicant must have an active Driver's License.
Correctional Officer Responsibilities
Ensure the care, custody, and control of offenders.
Officers must tour assigned areas which will require:
Periodically climbing stairs.
Observing offender activity in person and on closed-circuit monitors.
Identify offenders who have behavioral, medical, or other problems so that appropriate safety and security measures may be taken.
Perform general security duties to prevent escape, disorder, rule infractions, and harm to offenders, visitors, and staff.
Search offenders, visitors, cells, and other areas for weapons and contraband.
Monitor and regulate offender and staff movement.
Maintain and record offender counts, cell assignments, and other pertinent information.
Escort offenders within and outside the institution.
Use and maintain keys and other equipment.
Supervise offender work details.
Specific security duties vary by post-assignment.
PERSONAL APPEARANCE Employees must adhere to an appearance and grooming standard. Every employee is mandated to be in compliance with this policy.
WORK SCHEDULE This is a full-time position. Employees must be able to work any shift including rotating, fixed shift, or split shift. All shifts may include days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required.
Minimum Education And Experience
Correctional Officer I: High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Correctional Officer II: High School or GED diploma and one year of experience as a Correctional Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Correctional Officer III: High School or GED diploma and two years of experience as a Correctional Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
