About Us NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 19,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving the lives and property of its citizens through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration, Compliance & Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission, and Rehabilitation & Reentry. Description of Work Salary Range: $37,621-$54,078. Salary Grade: NC05-NC07. All hires are eligible for a $3,000 Sign on Bonus. Additionally, positions are eligible for employee referral bonus program ($1,000). The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction is eager to hire those committed to excellence and seeking a career path in public safety. We are seeking full-time employees to join our team as Correctional Officers and are pleased to announce the new Step Pay Plan approved by the NC Legislature. This pay-plan offers competitive starting salaries and guaranteed annual increases based on each year of experience as a North Carolina Correctional Officer. Those with prior North Carolina Correctional Officer experience can return to employment with full credit in the pay plan for each year of experience as well.
Correctional Officer Levels
Correctional Officer I: Minimum – officers require a minimum amount of oversight.
Correctional Officer II: Medium – officers require more supervision than those at Minimum facilities.
Correctional Officer III: Close – officers require close supervision and movement throughout the prison is heavily controlled.
Required Skills and Management Preferences
Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
Other Application Requirements
Active Driver's License.
Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
Attach DD‑214 for Veteran Preference.
Attach NGB 23A (RPAS) or DD256/NGB 22 for National Guard Preference.
Provide unofficial transcript for earned college credit hours if not a degree.
Correctional Officer Responsibilities
Ensure the care, custody, and control of offenders.
Tour assigned areas which will require periodically climbing stairs, observing offender activity in person and on closed‑circuit monitors.
Identify offenders with behavioral, medical, or other problems so that appropriate safety and security measures may be taken.
Perform general security duties to prevent escape, disorder, rule infractions, and harm to offenders, visitors, and staff.
Search offenders, visitors, cells, and other areas for weapons and contraband.
Monitor and regulate offender and staff movement.
Maintain and record offender counts, cell assignments, and other pertinent information.
Escort offenders within and outside the institution.
Use and maintain keys and other equipment.
Supervise offender work details.
Minimum Education and Experience
High School or GED diploma for Correctional Officer I.
High School or GED diploma with one year of experience for Correctional Officer II.
High School or GED diploma with two years of experience for Correctional Officer III.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience qualified as stated above.
