About Us NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 19,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving the lives and property of its citizens through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws.

This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration, Compliance Acidation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission, and Rehabilitation & Reentry.

Description of Work Salary Range: $37,621-$54,078

Salary Grade: NC05-NC07

All hires are eligible for a $3,000 Sign on Bonus. Additionally, positions are eligible for employee referral bonus program ($1,000).

We recruit for Correctional Officer I, II, and III levels statewide within our agency.

Correctional Officer Levels Level I (Minimum): Offenders require a minimum amount of oversight; they are permitted to enter/exit cells without permission during certain times of the day. Level II (Medium): Offenders require more supervision than those at Minimum facilities but less than Close. Level III (Close): Offenders require close supervision; movement is heavily controlled.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.

Correctional Officer Responsibilities Ensure the care, custody, and control of offenders. Tour assigned areas which will require: periodically climbing stairs, observing offender activity in person and on closed-circuit monitors, identifying offenders with behavioral, medical, or other problems so that appropriate safety and security measures may be taken. Perform general security duties to prevent escape, disorder, rule infractions, and harm to offenders, visitors, and staff. Search offenders, visitors, cells, and other areas for weapons and contraband; monitor and regulate offender and staff movement; maintain and record offender counts, cell assignments, and other pertinent information. Escort offenders within and outside the institution; use and maintain keys and other equipment; supervise offender work details.

Minimum Education and Experience Correctional Officer I: High School or GED diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Correctional Officer II: High School or GED diploma and one year of experience as a Correctional Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Correctional Officer III: High School or GED diploma and two years of experience as a Correctional Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Personal Appearance Employees must adhere to an appearance and grooming standard.

Work Schedule This is a full-time position. Employees must be able to work any shift including rotating, fixed shift, or split shift. All shifts may include days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required.

Societal Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
