Overview

The Psycho-Oncology Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program at the City of Hope is a 12-month program from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2027. Two full-time fellows will be selected with a stipend of $77,503.76. City of Hope National Medical Center. City of Hope is an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and one of the nation’s Top 10 hospitals for cancer care, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2025-2026 rankings. Located in Duarte, California, the hospital is 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles and 10 miles east of Pasadena. It comprises inpatient and outpatient medical facilities in addition to the Beckman Research Institute. City of Hope is one of only 73 NCI national comprehensive cancer centers and is a founding member of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Network. Training Program Philosophy

The primary goal of the City of Hope Psycho-Oncology Fellowship Program is to provide clinical health psychology training within a medical setting, with a special emphasis on psychosocial oncology. Training emphasizes behavioral medicine, health psychology, neuropsychology and end-of-life issues, preparing post-doctoral level candidates for professional service as clinical psychologists in medical settings. Training includes inpatient consultation/liaison services, outpatient psychological treatment, and opportunities for research.

City of Hope supports a multidisciplinary approach to patient and family care through the Department of Supportive Care Medicine. The care team includes Pain and Palliative Care physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, spiritual care chaplains and navigators offering consultation, psychotherapy, assessment, peer support, health information and more. Staff work individually and in groups focusing on strengths, resilience and hope. Psychology is an integral part of the medical and supportive care teams throughout the continuum of care.

Clinical Focus and Training Experiences

Fellows will gain experience with psychological issues associated with chronic and life-threatening illnesses, including depression, anxiety, existential concerns, body image, pain management, adapting to loss of physical functioning, treatment side effects, medical decision-making, suicidal ideation or behavior, nonadherence, substance abuse and end-of-life issues. There will be opportunities for inpatient consultation liaison, and short-term outpatient therapy. Additional training opportunities are available in chronic pain, psychiatry, neuropsychology, palliative care, pediatrics and geriatrics.

Specific Goals of the Fellowship Include: Recognize and address mental health concerns in patients with cancer and other medical problems. Increase awareness of cancer-site and treatment-specific psychological problems. Learn about timing and appropriateness of interventions (e.g., individual, group, couples, cognitive-behavioral, ACT, crisis intervention, acute stabilization, bereavement counseling). Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including physicians, nurses, social workers, case managers, etc. Liaison with treatment teams to facilitate understanding of patients and families. Expand consulting skills to assess, triage, make recommendations and provide treatment as appropriate. Develop identity as a competent, ethical, professional psychologist. Training in methodology, measurement, and research reporting.

Clinical Training Opportunities, Seminars, and Meetings The program provides year-long training in inpatient and outpatient consultation and liaison services. Responsibility and structure depend on prior experience. Fellows participate in weekly supervisory sessions, with individual supervision twice weekly, bi-weekly didactics and psychology case rounds, and weekly psychosocial case rounds. Fellows may participate in medical team rounds, tumor board and case conferences. Rotations are available in Neuropsychology, Pediatrics, Palliative Care and Psychology. Supervisors within the Psycho-Oncology program include Marissa Cangin, PsyD; Jeanelle Folbrecht, PhD; and Elaine Wheat Dawson, PsyD.

Evaluation and Application

Evaluation Process:

Fellows meet with the primary supervisor to determine individualized training goals at the start of the year. Goals are reviewed quarterly to ensure progress. Application Procedure:

Applicants must meet all standards and prerequisites of their accredited graduate program, have completed an APA-accredited internship, and be certified by their graduate school as candidates for fellowship.
