Since the Portland Food Project began in 2012, we have grown from 55 food donors to a network of over 1,500 donors, contributing 870,000 pounds of food to 19 local food pantries, providing a steady supply for those facing food insecurity. On Pickup Day, volunteers assist at the drop-off location by receiving, weighing, and distributing food delivered by Neighborhood Coordinators. The atmosphere is fun and celebratory. Volunteers typically work 2-3 hour shifts and can participate for part or all of the time. Pickup Day occurs on the second Saturday of every even month. Some lifting (up to 20 pounds) and exposure to the elements are involved. Please dress accordingly. Hands On appreciates your interest in volunteering to help our community during this time of need. 16 years or older . Volunteers under 16 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone. Click on "Express Interest" below if you are interested in helping out! This is a Referral Opportunity, managed directly by our nonprofit partners. After expressing interest, a partner organization will follow up to confirm your participation. Note that your hours may not be recorded in your Hands On Greater Portland account.
