The Cumming Group is a fast‑growing project and cost management consultancy. In this role you will work on high‑impact public works construction programs in a dynamic environment where your success is measured by the impact you make. The Controller position is located in San Diego, CA and will lead the fiscal management and budgetary controls of a large public works construction program.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Provide leadership in the financial controls of a large, multi‑billion dollar public works construction program, including providing executive level reporting on the program budget across multiple mediums.
Coordinate and provide support to Cost Managers and the client’s facilities staff to establish and maintain data coding structures and project control tools.
Interact with client accounting and purchasing staff, coordinate client financial information with the system for all financial transactions to ensure reconciliation of program controls data for monthly reporting purposes.
Gather and track quality data used for budgets, contracts, change orders, trends, and actual costs.
Maintain management reporting data to produce program controls reports.
Ensure regular and timely reporting of the projects’ financial progress to advise of any conditions that would affect timelines or costs.
Review documents filed by Cost Managers to ensure accurate and thorough document control.
Review, evaluate, and recommend changes to project documents as required by project needs.
Routinely review pay applications, change orders and contracts for accuracy and alignment with budget and board approval.
Monitor contract compliance and report concerns to Project Manager.
Oversee approvals from applicable government agencies are received and documented.
Perform QA/QC process.
Review change orders for completeness and conformance to company and client standards.
Review RFIs/Submittals for completeness before distribution to design team.
Provide basic cost scheduling and budget management.
Other duties as assigned.
Attendance at work during normal business hours.
Knowledge & Skills Required
Experience with various project control tools and software, including Simplifier.
Experience gathering and tracking quality data relating to budgets, contracts, change orders, trends and actual cost.
Experience with the QA/QC process.
Utilize effective written and oral communication skills.
Consistently communicate and collaborate with team members and clients.
Build relationships with peers, leaders, and clients.
Ability to communicate with various stakeholders, internal and external to the company.
Demonstrate an understanding of how project documentation impacts the project flow.
Ability to multi‑task, prioritize, and work efficiently.
Demonstrate sound judgement and logical decisions making skills.
Ability to perform at high levels in a fast paced, ever‑changing work environment.
Preferred Education And Experience
Bachelor degree in Finance, Accounting, or similar field.
At least 10 years in cost management, program controls, or related field.
Prior experience with financial controls of construction programs.
The salary range for this full‑time role is $146,400.00–$204,933.36 per year. The range reflects base salary only, and not the total compensation package.
